hi i have 3 rainbows and 3 firemouths can i add any south african cichlids in with these please or is it best to keep either south american or just south african seperate please, many thanks.

Hi there! Yeah its possible to mix a few Africans with those fish in suitable large tanks. What size tank are your 6 in at the moment? The most commonly mixed African cichlid are the Kribs but there are a few others that could work like the African butterfly cichlid or maybe jewel cichlids but these can be very very nasty. If you meant things like yellow labs or the electric blues etc they do much better in tanks with their own kind or similar. In a few "controversial" tanks mixing has worked but in the total times they have been mixed I would say 2/10 have been successful in the long run.

most African species require very different water stats to new worlds. there are also temperament issues. do you know which specific species you're after?

hi there.

i have a pair of firemouths a sev and 2 parrot fish and a few red line torpedo barbs and i have a couple of yellow labs in there also. i dont have a problem with aggression and my yellow lab female is carrying her second batch of fry. i would say its hit and miss really if they mix and i must be lucky as all mine get along just fine.

hope this helps
