Can Fish Smell Something Out Of The Water?

My vote is that this is a "Palov's dogs" induced reaction at this time ;)

They do have a sense of smell but not as we do, thats why I was wondering if their nares picked up sent out of the water.

Science bit

At a guess if they are picking up smells of things outside the tank then it must be due to the molecules entering the water through surface agitation maybe?

I doubt they can smell everything that's been talked about but thinking of fried bacon and how it can fill the air with that lovely smell there is a good possibility those smelly molecules make it into the water :)

For the most past I'd say it's seeing you around the tank, especially if the time is about right, that gets them excited..."Pavlov's dogs" is most likely I'd say (http://nobelprize.org/educational/medicine/pavlov/readmore.html)
