i was wondering if fish are ever stressed about noise in their tank.. because i put my ear up to my tank glass, and its like hearing a bulldozer in their... yet *i* dont hear anything unless i do that... plus i have a huge stereo in my room, and there are three speakers, and a subwoofer close to the tank... as well as 3 more away.. do you think the fish are annoyed or stessed my noise?

i have a double sub about 15 feet from my tank and as long as im not playing anything to bassy its all right

Fish don't hear things in the same way as we do, they more "feel" sound. Playing loud music and stuff will stress your fish out, you don't realy want to be playing metalica at full blast next to your little fish's home, but im sure a little noise won't do them much harm as long as its not 24/7..

as a general rule tanks should never be placed near t.Vs or sound systems even if you only use them once a month because constant or loud noise can easily stress fish (not all fish but I wouldn't try testing) to the point of death or getting very sick.So you should try moving your tank or sound system to a different room

Fish can hear similar to the way we do as they have a pair of internal ears separate from their lateral line, but as long as your fish don't seem to be stressed by it I wouldn't worry too much. I have a betta right in front of my comp speakers and he doesn't even flinch when I turn music on.... but of course, I tend to keep the volume relatively low so as not to disturb others in the house, so it may be different if you like to turn your volume up so loud the walls vibrate ;)

This question comes up every once in a while. I won't copy it here, but the physics of the situation shows that sounds from the air does not enter the water very easily. Here is the old forum thread: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=82771

Unless you can feel the vibration when you put your hand on the tank, or see the waves a la Jurassic Park, then I don't think it is too large of an issue.

hmmm... my walls *do* viberate... the entire house too... maybe i should just move the bose 911's... they make the most bass... but im not sure if the tank is affected much...

fish feel vibrations, and most of them hear in the way synirr is saying - they are acually diffferent ways that a fish can 'listen', so to speak.

Your walls vibrate...maybe move your neighbours, too then?

Fish love Sigur Ros, ....no base as this will vibrate the tank and this effects the fish even if they are deaf!!!

Fish do hear. Try talking loudly near people who are fishing and see what happens! I like loud music too, I play it right next to the tank. With headphones on! :)

hmmm... Maybe my fish like the loud music too!!! they dont seem affected at all by the vibrating... (though my neibors do) i'll just leave it as it is unless they show some stress out of it... ;)

Well why wait til your fish are physically suffering because of your actions? I doubt the fish enjoy loud music, if you are actually concerned about your fish i'd move them into a quieter room or just stop playing load music next to them, better safe knowing that your fish are happy than sorry and unsure of how much harm you are doing to them, no? Better to be on the safe side.
