I am still using the small bag of food that came with my fish tank set. At the rate im going at, the bag will not be empty any time soon. I feed my fish a decent sized pinch. Each of the four fish gets 3-4 flakes. I'm wondering if I should throw the old stuff away and start using  my newer can that also has little bits of shrimp in it. What do you think?

Fish food can expire, it will usually have a date somewhere on it's packaging.

is that 3 or four flakes, large flakes or small pieces---wonder if 3-4 flakes is enough---I feed my fish 3 times a day and they get several small flakes and some daphnia each when i feed---what kind of fish do you have

I have tons of fish flakes, I think that as long as they are kept dry and do not mold etc it should be fine.
I feed my fish once a day, 3 days a week. IMO i find that it allows the fish to clean out the digestive system and less waste they have to sit in until the next water change.
the fish i have is on my profile :p have 4 tanks. 3 are live plants :p

You should give enough for them to eat for around 1-2 minutes depending on how often you feed them a day.

And I feed my fish once every other day with flakes, enough for two minutes of feeding. And once a month an occasional earth worm or two as a treat :) They love those.

I have one Swordtail and three Platys. Those little guys eat extremely quickly. I swear, if I dumped the entire bag in the fish would be done in 30 seconds. (if shaky would stop staring at me instead of eating the food!)

I have larger, and much slower fish so it works for me :) especially that poor parrot fish, he struggles a little when it comes to feeding. So he really takes two minutes.

This is something I was wondering about as well as have read about food no longer being nutritious after a certain amount of time. I don't know though. :c

When they start to smell stale, that's when I tossed mine. Now the new flakes smell like potatoes (???)

They do. I had a 1/4 kg of sinking pellets that either molded or started to lose the fishy smell. When they start losing the fishy smell and turn dusty then they're way off their expiration
