I found a single fry in my tank about 3mths ago. Id thought for sometime it was a platy and the platy must of been pregnant when i bought it. but now it is getting bigger i am more certain. I also found a large amount of fry in my tank 4 wks ago and have now moved them to the nursery tank. Im unsure as to what they are as the platy was born see through, then turned yellow and then orange. These were born orange. They were also born about 2mths after the platy fry and I only have one platy in the tank.

I havent been trying to breed anything and i am wondering if this fry could be from my albino cat fish. As this fish had been very quite for a few days before i found the fry.

This picture was taken when the fry was about a week old. I have some photos of them now at 4wks but im struggeling to upload them.

I have a better pic but it wont let me upload it for some reason. Im not very good at this. Ive been thinking on and off for the last 4 weeks that they are probably platy's but im confused with them being born orange and also confused that the platy has been in the tank for at least 2 mths before they were born and there is no other platys in the tank. Is it posible that another breed of fish could of mated with it?

In my tank I have ;

1 red wag plattie
1 black molly
1 albino catfish
1 red sword tail
1 neon tetra blue/red
1 neon tetra black/orange
1 glow tetra

If that helps at all. The albino catfish, neon tetra black/orange and glow tetra were the last fish to go in about 2weeks before i found the fry.

No... "other fish mate with it"... rule that one out (unless you have swords in there).... but the Platy might still be pregnant from previous encounters with a male...... anything up to 6 months... just may be that the first (couple) of births was not noticed.

There is one sword tail in there. It has really confused me. Just trying again to upload another pic. thanx for advice so far.

Still no joy on uploading pic. Ive tried cropping it so there is less to upload but it still not having it.

I stil cant upload the pic i want to upload. I took it on a really high quality camera and ive figured out the memory size is way too big for the upload on here. Dont no if there is anyway around that. Gona try this one and see if its any better quality than the last one. This is the fry at 1wk again.

That isnt really any clearer. sorry folks.

Platy fry.
Females actually have the ability to store sperm to use at a later date. Females can also hold onto fry for up to 8 weeks and more if they don't feel safe.

Thank u for that. I thought they were platy's but was confused with it not having a male in the tank. I would like to keep some of the fry but dont want to end up with constant births of more fry. Does anyone know how to tell the sex of platy's. thanx

Thanx for that. It was a big help. I have a swordtail in there and following the rule on the link u sent me it is a male. So looks like it could be the swordtail that is breading with the platy.
