Exact same problem, I dont think you can get around it. I love being told what I can and cant do by my computer...

Download firefox as your primary browser, when i bought the new PC last month it came loaded with Vista and the latest version of IE which wouldnt let me use chat, after quickly installing firefox i havent had any more problems apart from getting used to the new system which took a couple of days.

Just downloaded firefox, still didnt work, said I needed Java but wouldnt let me complete the installation.

After restarting my computer I was able to install Java on firefox and its now up and running, thanks
