from my sand without actually taking water out? I think it has like a mesh bag attached to it so it picks water and dirt up but the water stays in the tank.
You don't necessarily need something that leaves the water in the tank. You need to change a certain percentage of water, usually 15 to 25 percent, on a regular basis simply to reduce nitrate. So a normal gravel vacuum is fine in that it removes trash and water. Simply removing the trash and no water and then topping off the water to fill the tank back up where the water has evaporated will allow the impurities to build as only water evaporates while everything else stays in the tank.
