Hello there!

Seems like a long time since I've been on this forum. Life got in the way but for anyone who remembers me, my tank cycled before Christmas :) I currently have 2 honey gourami, 5 green neon tetra, 4 pygmy corydoras, 2 cherry shrimp and 3 zebra snails.

However, when I bought my pygmy corydoras (this was about 1 month ago), I noticed there was a tiny tiny fish (about 5mm in length) that had probably gotten into the net by accident when I got my fish from the fish shop. I put it into the tank anyway, although I was worried that the gouramis would end up having a tasty meal...

I hadn't seen this fish for ages so assumed that it was eaten (oh noes :( )until the other day I found it swimming around. It's grown quite a bit now. It doesn't have barbels, seems to have a totally different profile and also seems to have a orange and black dorsal fin which is making me think it's not a pygmy corydora... So what is it? It's difficult to take pictures as it's still small and moves around a lot (also my camera skills aren't amazing!) but here are some of the best photos I could get:

Can anyone ID this fish? Will I have to remove it from my tank??

noyou're right, it's definately not a corydoras :)
looks to me like some sort of live-bearer fry
like a guppy/molly...

personally i'd try and fish him out and put him in a little tank to nurture him to grow

but he should be okay in that tank, seeing as he's still alive
:)

keep us all posted with photos, it'll be easier to identify as it gets bigger :D

good luck little fish!

just a note:
if you decide to try and move him, try once a day for about 5 mins, until you finally get him.
dont chase him around all day because it'll stress him out... and he's only small

might be just me but its face looks a little more 'killi fish like' than livebearer?

Its a cute wee thing!

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, I was thinking of a little tank too. Maybe this is a good excuse to get one - I should probably invest in a quarantine tank anyway!
I'll keep you posted as it develops! :)

I really have no idea... I've never seen fry other than zebra ones so I haven't got a clue. I'm just hoping someone can recognise it!

It is really cute tho! I keep on checking up on it.

Not a molly. But does look like some kind of guppy/endler cross?

I have no idea what he is besides cute, but I love the gouarmi lurking in the first photo!

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'll be curious to see what it develops into. I'll be posting pictures again once it's a bit bigger :)

When you picked up your cories, was there any other type of fish in the tank with them? That might help in IDing him. I know my LFS have 2-3 different types of fish in a tank together.

That's the thing... I can't remember seeing anything else in that tank. I might visit again one of these days and have a look.

I guess Heterandria formosa

I think this is it! It definitely looks like it :) Fantastic!
