Hey fellow tropical fish enthusiasts,

The above fish was captured (by camera, not in a net) at Staten Island ferry terminal, New York. He was very quick, and was observed repeatedly swimming around the outside of the tank in a clockwise orbit, perhaps due to some form of fish-based anxiety disorder (most likely OCD).

Does anyone know what type of fish s/he is? Initally I thought it might be a surgeonfish, but now I'm not so sure. It'd be good if anyone knew - me and my mate have a £1 bet on it, so if anyone could help me out I might possibly be able to let you in on a bit of that action...!

Many thanks

That my friend looks to be a young Pinktail Triggerfish.
Quite a nasty bite on them so try not to get your fingers(or anything else) too close to it's mouth. They also have 2 spines on the dorsal fin, one of which lock into place so they can sting you... These are poisonous so watch out for that too.

I was going to say looks like some kind of trigger, not very friendly fellows :(.x

Its definately a Pink Tail trigger...

Marine fish, one of the much nicer triggers, get fairly big but again, not one of the largest.

Definately not venemous and dont sting you either :) Their fins lock so they can wedge themselves into gaps in the rocks if they are threatened or sleeping at night.

They do seem to have scarey teeth but it is purely because they eat crustaceans like shrimp, snails and crabs...

Gorgeous fish!

Maybe it's only certain ones that are venomous then... Anyway, if your saying they don't have spines either... That they do have.

They do have spines :) Hence trigger fish, they suddenly lock thir spines in an upright position to lock themselves into crevaces (sp) in rockwork so a/ they cant be pulled out by predatory fish/humans b/ so they can sleep without budging etc...

I dont believe any of the Triggerfish families are venemous, but lots of marine fish are venemous via spines on their back in simlar places like the Lionfish (not just he big volitans but all the dwarf and other large species too) and maybe you are thinking of the Fox Faces? Also known as Rabbitfish?

That could be it! I think I was...

Fox faces are gorgeous to say the least!! I love them to bits but too risky for me to have around, would probably kill me :(

Would be an angry bee or wasp sting to most people apparently but being allergic to fish (haha isnt that ironic!) im not hanging about to find out!

I have been jabbed by triggers, we have an undulated trigger (look it up, omg are they stunning!) and i did react mildly to it but thats because it pierced my skin... not because its venemous.

I knew it was one of them... I just couldn't remember whether it was Fox Faces or Triggerfish. My Girlfriend thought I was talking about Rockfish earlier when I mentioned Spines
Fox faces are really nice but I can't have a Marine Tank as I live with my mum and she doesn't want me having a Marine Tank in the house with the 7 month old sister...

Pink tailed trigger.

My dad has a Picasso in his tank, built like a brick -- house.

Nasty bites on these guys, ours has a habit of chewing off parts of live rock and spitting out sand, gives you an idea of their bite.
