Hi, I got 2 of these shrimp from my LFS, and not sure what they are, the LFS said they came in dutch packaging, they didn't know much about them, I thought they looked cool. I just hope they don't get too big, also they are algae eaters, as they are very happy when I give them wafers. Also is there anything else I should be feeding them?

Here it is:

Thanks for your future help

Hi there, prob best off to ask a mod to transplant this to the invertebrate section... looks predatory with those claws...

Could be bamboo shrimp... They get like 6-8cm i think

Bamboo shrimps don't have claws like that. Not amano shrimps either. Are you sure it will eat algae?! Are you sure it's not some kind of small crayfish?

Yeh I'm sure. I put algae wafers in and both scurried along and took a piece each. I know very strange. The shop did say they might eat any small fish like neons that get near them. But I've got nothing that small that swim on the bottom, apart from platy fry when they breed

Whats the difference between shrimp and crayfish?

It's not a Bamboo shrimp. It looks like a Rock shrimp to me as they have the "pincers" instead of the fans. The pic isn't totally clear but that's my guess atm.

If it's a Rock shrimp, they may eat other shrimp and small fish so watch out!

the difference is shrimp grow to about 8 cm's max crayfish especially the american signal crayfish grow to about 10" with claws like small lobsters will draw blood if caught in them.
the bonus being you get a lovely meal with a cray fish lol

Erm.. I generally know Bamboo Shrimp as Rock shrimp and they are purely filter feeders and definately not what that is.

That is some species of 'long armed shrimp' seriously, thats what they are on the suppliers lists as! Macrobrachium sp.

From what I hear, they can be fairly predatory towards smaller shrimp and fish but not *too* bad.

Rock shrimp is not the correct name for Bamboo shrimp which is why I said it's not a Bamboo Shrimp. Rock shrimp is a common name where I live for the shrimp that has long arms and pincers. You are correct in that it looks like a member of the long armed species.

Long Armed Freshwater Shrimp

Not the best picture I know but maybe you can compare it to yours. This shrimp WILL eat small fish but does also eat algea and food scrapes.

Similar to that. Only that one pincer is far bigger than the other. It is darker than that.

Ok, so if it is a predatory shrimp, then what should I be feeding them?
