Location
East coast of England.
We visited the Fish Store yesterday where Julian, our 18 inch Ornate Polypterus came from. This shop has the habit of taking in large fish from customers who can no-longer house them.
Because the store takes them in for free, they sell them on at a very good price. Julian was only £27!

So anyway, yeterday they had two magnificent fish:
  • An eleven inch tortoiseshell coloured Clarias batrachus catfish in prime condition. Like this one.
  • A ten inch black shark, absolutely geogeous.
We didn't ask the price of the shark, but we did ask about the Clarias (we were sorely tempted) and he offered it to us for £15!

So if anyone lives within driving distance of Ipswich and wants a large and beautiful fish, pm me for the store location before some idiot buys that Clarias for his guppy tank.

damn ,thought you were goiong to say they had another big bichir!!

we have a 1ft long clarias at work at the moment, although sold along with 2 pacus!!

Hey, we may be moving to east England :)

I think it would be near Huntingdon. I've been looking at maps like crazy trying to learn where everything is.

We find out either this week or next week. I think it would be AWESOME!

I would just love that catfish SirMinion but he's a bit too big for my tank. Ive noticed from your threads that you must live in my part of the world, where do you consider the best fish shop is around these parts?

They all have their pros & cons, but these are the places LadyMinion and I frequent.
  • Ipswich
    • Viking aquatics has these wonderful rescue fish, but otherwise they're pretty dire with undersized tanks, they talk bullpoop based on what their wholesalers tell them and the tanks could be cleaner.
    • Pets at home is... well it's pets at home....
    • Seapets has a good range at reasonable prices and their dry goods & foods are excellent, but their fish are often diseased and they don't quarantine at all. Despite this they offer no livestock guarantees, once it's out the door, it's your problem. They also haven't a clue about adult sizes on any fish.
    • Rats, Cats & Elephants - Small range of fish but knowlegable staff that actually care. Not too hot on oddballs and have a supplier that never seems to have anything I ask for. Great for cichilds though
    • Kesgrave Aquatics -Big on 'ordinary' fish, esspecially livebearers, tetras and gourami. Rarely have anything unusual, but fish prices there are very very good generally.
  • Colchester
    • Seapets - Don't bother. Crappy range of sick fish in an overcrouded dingy shop.
    • Swallow aquatics - Excellent range of good quality fish, huge marine section, an entire wall of cichlids, spotless tanks, good prices, full range of live foods including river shrimp and jumbo bloodworm. The only downside (for my taste anyway) is they rarely have much in the way of odd-balls.
    • Betta Aquatics - Small shop but good rang and great prices. Some tankbusters! I've only been there once but I remeber liking it.
Of course, all this is only based on my experiance and opinions.
Hope it helps though.

Thanks for that SirMinion, I agree with most of what you say. Got my tank from Seapets at Martlesham but up to now have only bought fish from Swallow. Oh & my panda corys from Rats, Cats & Elephants. Hav'nt been to Betta Aquatics, will have to sweet talk better half into a trip out one day. I usually just use Viking to stock up with food as I dont need transport to get there. I agree about the state of the tanks - compare them with tanks at Swallow & a drive to Colchester sounds like a good idea.
