Callamanus Worms. Med Discussion

Hi there


I have a tricky little problem on my hands: My young female molly has red string-like threads hanging from her anus. They move when she does. After some google research iv come to the conclusion that it is callamanus worms. I ran out and bought Jungle Parasite Clear, I put a tab into my 10 Gallon tank at about 7pm. Is this medication good enough to clear the problem? I live in Canada...and it's really hard to get any good meds around here without ordering them and paying way too much money. I tried getting Gel-Tek Ultra Cure PX but the one place I can order it from/buy it from their store has been out of stock for months.

So what I would like to know is, is the Jungle Parasite Clear good enough?

If so, how many doses do you reccomend and for how long?

I heard its very contagious, do I sanatize my whole tank? I just moved 2 days ago so a 100% water change has been done.


Iv also been reading that Panacur (Dog de-wormer) can be used to very effectivly kill these worms? It was noted to dissolve 3 grams of the powder into about 100 ml of water with blood worms in it. Let the food soak up the meds, then feed. Should I order some or wait to see if this Parasite Clear does the trick?

I think that callamanus worms are supposed to retreat into the fish at it's slightst movement. But what I did was I took a garlic gel cap, and I soaked my fishes food in garlic gel caps for a week. It is supposed to weaken the parasites, and the fish loved it.

Levamasole, which is actually a pig wormer, available at stores that sell supplies for livestock works well. Paracode_X,available from National Fish Pharmacy, woks well also; http/www.nationalfishpharm.com/products3.html

I was talking with National Fish Pharmacy around a week ago, discussing this product. Besides being easier to work with than levamasole he said it often works better, being designed for fish.

National Fish Pharmacy has a med called Paracide D that will kill the worm if you put it on the food, also you may want to try PraziPro, it contains PraziQuantel

You wanna use something with Levamisole in it. Jungles has a parasitic food that contains a small amount. I managed to get a bunch of pure levamisol and used it in my tank. . .the guppy I found which had the worms was removed from the tank. That's really important. (Sorry to say, but you need to euthanize the molly you have!)

Be sure not to use any of the syphons, etc., that you have in any other tanks. Also, disinfect your nets!

They wont die just because they are infected. If you treat with a good med, they should make it.

I've been using Levamasole for a a while now. After dealing with my first case of worms I deworm all my fish in quarantine. Never had a issue with it. I use a 90% Levamasole HCl powerer that I bought as a pig/sheep dewormer. I use my EI fert scale to measure dosage, so it is a harder med to measure. Never had a single problem with it though. $16 for a amount that will expire before I use it all...

Alright, so im back with another little problem

Amazon wants to charge me $44 American just for the shipping on Panacur. So I looked into Paracide-X...its going to be pretty much the same cost with the exchange rate and all with shipping. And I cannot buy Levamasole in Canada by the looks of it. All of these things are looking to be about in the $50+ range American. Does anyone know of any dealers in Canada? Or another medication? I feel so horrible for my fish but I dont have a ton of money.


Any ideas?


Edit: It looks as if the worms are starting to get the best of my poor girl...she is sitting at the bottom of the tank with troubled breathing. Im assuming it wont be long...

Once a fish is infested with worms and the fish is really skinny, the damage has been done.
You still have to treat the whole tank to save the rest.
Also camallanous worms cause bacterial infections, So after treatment you have to back up with a bacterial med.

If you can fine the bird dewormer Harka Verm the doseage is 1.25ml per 10gal. The med is 80% levamisole HCl. I suggested it to someone in the UK before and as far as I know they had success with it removing the worms.

Cannot get the Harka Verm either. I just phoned some vets and Panacur is availible but I need a perscription for a dog/cat. Others didn't know what the heck I was talking about. So I found this http/www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752059&lmdn=Dog+Health+Care


Im going to order some, as it looks to be the cheapest method available to me. Crossing my fingers it gets here soon and it contains enough Fenbendazole to work!


EDIT: I just found some Panacur through 1 800 Petmeds. They are the only people willing to ship this stuff to Canada....thank god. At a cost of about $40 to me this better work
