One of my angelfish has red worms sticking out of it's vent. I have done research and i am certain it is callamanus. I called my vet and he has prescribed some Levamisole Hydrochloride. I would really appreciate some advice on 1. how to use it, and 2. the pros and cons of it. Also would be interested to hear with anyone who has dealt with callamanus, I have fry in the tank and am concerned for them.

Sorry never experienced it, but did the vet not tell you how to use it? And could you isolate the infected fish while you treat it?

Ok. it sounds alot like callamanus. Levamisole HCL paralyzes the worms so they fall out and remain paralyzed on the bottom. the only problem is that to thoroughly remove from tank, you must do alot of gravel vacumming, which may be a problem since you have fry in there. depending on which type of Levamisole you are using, there are different ways to give to your fish. this website tells you everything to know about it:

thats all i know.

Thanks for the advice, the fry are a few months old so cleaning isnt a problem!

The vet has given me 20 mls of levamisole to use in my 200l tank. The instructions say use 5.33 ml three times in 1 week. Everything i've read online seems to say that a much larger dose is needed and that the treatment should take place over 3 weeks as levamisole doesn't kill eggs. Surely my vet knows what to prescribe though? Any advice? And any opinions on flubanol as I may treat with this if the vet wont prescribe me more.

Thanks!

you must use it as the vet prescribed or not at all, as it is a controlled drug under VMD2007.

Why bother consulting a professional if you are not going to take their advice?

i didn't say i wasn't going to treat as the vet prescribed but after treating the fish still have worms s i was asking further advice. Professionals don't always know everything and the reason i consulted one was because you cant buy the stuff over the counter in the uk.
