I recently bought a calico convict (super rare for around here, first one I've ever seen). It seems to have settled in and is eating very well.

Just wanted to post some pics. Oh, and thoughts on male or female? Boyfriend thinks it's female, just want to get a consensus. As well, should I try breeding it, which would be a better choice of partner (in hopes of maybe getting more calico) - black or pink?

(Above pics where taken shortly after it arrived, so it wasn't completely settled in yet. I should probably take some more, better, ones.)

wow its pretty, i have never heard of a calico convict

Very Pretty. I've seen them before. They are usually 7 dollars ( E 3.50). I would get another Calico. THats the problems with calico's, its more difficult to sex them. I would guess its a female. I would purchase 3 more, and let them pair off and take the other 2 back.

Jb - I hadn't either until we saw this one at the petstore. (And after swearing never to own a convict, I couldn't help but buy this one.)

Kribensis12 and Tobigara - ;) If I could find a bunch more calico's I would buy them... But like I said, this is the first I've seen in the couple years I've been in the hobby. So I'm not holding my breath on finding another, let alone a bunch. So I'm thinking that perhaps the pink would be a better choice. Since from what I can tell it would be recessive over the black colouring.

I bought these a while back now and they were marked as marble convicts and were going for £1 each lol bought 5, 2 died and another 2 died from tumours a few months ago but the one i have left is doing just fine. No matter what kinda convicts they are there all the same when it comes to breeding, a huge pain in the ass! as i said to somebody else, they breed more than rabbits lol. If you breed them then you better have another 10 tanks because they can have something like 100 eggs and the majority of them survive. even if you breed them and try to sell them nobody will take them because everybody knows how badly they breed.not to mention they can be REALLY aggressive towards everything when breeding and will even attacl your hand lol
