Will a Chinese Algae eater do well in a 36g tank with 6-7 gouramis & platys? I'm thinking of relocating mine to a friend's tank but I dont want him to bother my friend's fishes. -_-

Not swatted up on my chinese algae eaters.... how large do they grow? Would a 36g b big enough 4 him 4 the rest of his life? -_-

As CAEs mature, they become less efficient as algae cleaners, and more likely to feed off the slime coat of tank mates, especially slower moving or flat bodied fish (watch your Gouramis). Losing the slime coat could lead to infection. I have had a bad experience with one, and personally wouldn't own one again (or palm it off on a friend) I advise you find an LFS that may take it (don't expect anything for it) Sometimes I see these fish in sump tanks at LFS' with little to no chance of rehoming...I think it is sad that they are sold as community fish. They should be sold with the same caution as Cichlids, or other predator fish IMHO.

Get to 10". I think though that putting one with flat-bodied fish like gouramies is just asking for trouble.

But what can I do with him if the lfs wont take him back? I feel horrible trying to get rid of one of my pets and talking about giving him away..:-(

Ok here's the update. I transferred the CAE to the 36g tank last evening...I'll have my friend keep an eye on him for agressiveness or other abnormal behavior. So far so good. I'll keep the post updated.

I had one in my 35 gal. Bought him at less than an inch in lenght, died 3 years later at 10 or 11 inches. He was huge. he lived in an ornament that was hollow in the middle, and only came out at night. I never saw him unless I snuck in the room after the tank lights went out. I have a community tank - barbs, danios and platties. No one ever bugged him, as I'm sure they thought he would swallow them whole.
