OK, I have been looking at different plants, I guess I am going with some standard plants for my new tank. I was wondering if anyone had a picture of Cabomba in their tank, I can't decide if I like it or not, I was thinking it would be good or filling out a back corner or something. The other plants I am thinking are:
Hairgrass, dwarf sag and pygmy chain sword in front levels
Amazon sword, vallis and Java fern
With some carpet type thing with Riccia
I currently have some kind of crypt and other plant which I don't know what it is.
Would the cabomba look ok or not? Hard to tell when buying it online what it might be like in a tank.
Thanks

some of my tank pics here show cabomba

will be a good plant to fill a corner at the back of the tank.....

Lovely plant but does prefer higher lighting other wise it starts getting leggy and lose it's branches mid to low levels but then higher light levels require more ferts and usually introduction of CO2 of some sort.

The other plants sound a nice combo but be aware that riccia is a high demand plant (again can be seen in the foreground of the pic), does prefer nice good lighting but it also is maintenance hungry and once gets quite dense starts to starve the underneath parts which will cause them to rot and uproot/detach and there is nothing worse than having riccia all over the tank lol. Ive kept it on and off in the past both as a carpet and for rock features and found it had to be literally replanted/attached every 4-6 weeks and it is painstakingly tedious at times lol.

Lovely little plant but can be more hassle than it's worse sometimes ;)

Im not entirely sure what the lighting is going to be like in my new tank as it is 2nd hand. Maybe I will hold off on those 2. I have seen mixed reviews about the riccia, some websites say its must have CO2 others say it doesn't need it but with CO2 it will 'pearl'.
I wanted to have a nice carpet plant, I plan to attach it possibly to some slate caves for something a little bit different but not sure I like java moss. I have Xmas moss which I am going to try out as well. Riccia just looked nice and its brighter in colour! If it was kept trimmed would it be ok underneath?
The cabomba looks great in your tank, Im still not sure I like how bushy it is! Also don't fancy it breaking off everywhere in my tank!
What plant is that in the front corner of the tank?

Unfortunately yes the riccia will still need taking out and redoing, basically even though your trimming it's promoting more growth which lead to been denser all round so it still will start to strangle the plant underneath. If you are happy with the potential maintenance regime then this is a stunning plant to have in the tank and looks superb as a carpet. To the CO2 and riccia, yes it would like CO2 but it isn't essential, the tank above had no co2 form whatsoever and the plant grew and spread like no one's business. Ive even had it in tanks and dose easy carbo which again people say that it hates and i only ever had good results so i think it's like most plants, people have good and bad experiences with it... good luck to you been one of the good experienced people :).

Cabomba is a lovely filling plant and it does look nice but yeah i agree it's another plants once it starts to lose it's leaves is a pain all round the tank.

the plant in the front right hand corner actually looks like a java fern to me but this tank was so long ago and the fact im crap at ID'ing plants lol, it could be something else, it should aswell if java fern be attached to something and not buried in the substrate... we live and learn eh? lol

I thought it was a java fern or something similar! Think I will leave Cabomba for now. I am going to take the challenge and get Riccia :) I love doing things with my tank so would be happy to take it out and redo it (hopefully) haha! Getting the new tank tomorrow so I'm very excited! Going to order plants online, just making decision who to order from and they should come next week for me to plant. I won't be using CO2 on the tank, for something that size I can DIY it and its too expensive for me! Need to find a decent fert to use though. Not sure at the moment what to use.
Thanks for the helpful advice as always :good:

New tank :), always nice planning new tanks. Good luck with riccia, as ive said it's a stunning plant and looks lovely as a carpet.

Ferts for cheapness would be dry powders and use a TPN+ recipe mix and mix it yourself, would be a complete fertiliser and would work very well for low tech plants. Buying branded liquid ferts for large tanks costs an arm and a leg so dry would be the way to go for dosing large(ish) quantities on larger tank.

Good luck anyways and look forward to the pics :)

Do you have any links for the dry powders? Put TPN+ in but google gave me a load of rubbish tbh! haha!

I'm very excited about getting this tank all set-up, got some ideas that most likely won't work out how I planned so am hoping it will look ok! Going to need some help from people I think! :) Want some really nice bogwood but I was going to get some redwood from a guy and he ended up selling to someone else :( gutted! Still looking or that 'nice' piece that I like! Will take a while to get everything I think. Got my plants on order to come next week, hoping they come in good condition. Tank will be quite bare to begin with
