After another 3 (Supposedly hardy platty) fish died a few days ago I decided its time to accept defeat and return the rest of my fish to the lfs :-(

I work silly hours and to be honest after being sold the wrong varierty of fish at the beginning it has been one hassle after another (as some of you may know!)

Thanks to everyone for their help on here... It helped me out loads in moments of panic when things went wrong!!!

With the fish now rehomed, it leaves me with a juwel rekord 96 litre tank so if anyone in the local Southampton area would like to make me a sensible offer, please feel free...

Note to noobs - I have big regrets that I didnt research which fish were compatible with each other, and how to care for the fish properly, as much as I should have. This is all too common... DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE, KEEPING TROPICAL FISH DOES REQUIRE A FAIR AMOUNT OF YOUR TIME!!

Thanks again

L

Sorry to hear this. And if you were to be bitten by the aquarium bug and try again, you'd quickly learn that this thing probably will happen to every single one o fus. What happened to you happened to me twice when I was learning, and I have had much worse happen. But once your tank is set up and mature, and once you know what your doing, fish take the ABSOLUTE LEAST amount of time to take care of than any other pet, and they are more beautfiul and fun to have than any hamster, and much more easy to cope with than a loud squaking bird. IMO the only animal in this world more important to me than my fish is my best friend and lovable dog Baja.

Please don't give it up. I know you have had a rough time and think of it this way, you now have a better understanding of how to look after fish, surely it is worth giving it one more go? The rewards far outway the pitfalls.

I really dont think I could... Everyday I would watch them and see how unhappy a lot of them were as they were bullied or in the worst cases how ill they were.

I understand that this isnt how it always is and In a few years when I'm more settled I would probably try again. I'm certainly not put off for life, I thought they were beautiful and miss them already but nows just not the right time for the hassle its giving me. I certainly won't miss the snails though!

I think I would just go for all Platties in future, surely you cant go wrong with a dozen of them! lol

sorry your leaving the hobby for now anyway :(

Sorry to hear your decision.
Anyway, i have had this loads of times, about 5 or more of my fish have been lost to white spot, and it is very very frustrating. :grr:
I also think you are right in saying that you cant go wrong with platies, i have 2 used to have 3, but lost one :grr: They are the easiest fish and hardyest fish to keep in my opinion.

it's understandable that you want time off, but if you think you might ever be interested in keeping fish again once the bite of this experience wears off, i would suggest keeping that tank. You'll kick yourself later for getting rid of all those supplies and having to repurchase them.

best of luck! :good:

I believe what starrynightxxi is saying about keeping the tank. I move every 3 to four years and sale my tanks. I always say no more but my daughter gives me those eyes and well here come the tanks. Well take some time off and than when your ready get back into it. We will be here to see the picts.
Take care. and good luck.

Why not keep the tank and cycle it. Do some reading up and when the tank is cycled and you feel ready to take it up again then you will have a ready cycled tank so you can just get the fish you want? Maybe even do the decor.

i'm always sorry to hear anyone leaves the hobby. the key to keeping fishkeeping an enjoyable and not too time consuming hobby is realy research. so take your time now while you have no fish, just take half an hr a week or something to have a browse of the forums and learn what you can. then when you feel you have the time to dedicate to doing things properly you will have a good level of knowledge to plan and set up a nice low maintenance tank.
