Buying Online...

Unfortunately fish aren't just ornaments and can't be thrown in together.

The bright side is that when you spend hours researching a stocking list, add them all together and it works fine it is incredibly satisfying.

Yeah, i know, but i have been thinking about getting fish for over a year and i've thought about 7 different stock lists. All of them wouldn't work somehow.

What size and dimensions are the tank, what filtration?

Stick a list up of all the fish you're interested in (in order of the most desirable fish top, least desirable bottom) and I'll give you a suggested and an alternative list when I get a couple of minutes.

I have never bought online mainly because I have a lot of fish stores available to me. If you can get them locally, I think that is what would be best. Shipping on fish is very expensive so you can definitely buy cheaper at the LFS. If you want more exoctic fish that aren't available, then online is an option.

As for hardware, online is definitely cheaper, except for tanks. Because if the risk of breakage, tanks are cost prohibitive online.

Just got back from the pub (not pissed, driving) and am about to settle down with a film - will have a look first thing tomorrow mate.

Sand can also be expensive. Most online places charge extra freight because of the weight. Depending on the type sand you use, most likely, you can get it cheaper locally. Play sand for instance, only runs about $3 to $5 a bag and the freight would run at least double that. Even more exotic sands such as Tahitian Moon sand which I use, is cheaper locally than online.

I have bought all my driftwook online at Big Als. I know you are across the pond so they wouldn't be an option for you but I just couldn't find anything I liked locally. Price will probably run about the same. Best option is to find an online store that has all the items you want (or at least most of them) and get it all at once to save on shipping. Most charge shipping by the total price unless you have heavy items like the sand and then there's an additional charge.
