Buying Jewel Rio 400 Is Filter Good Enough?

Carbon is a complete waste of time have a look at how crystal my water is. Polyfilter has done that if I took it out it will be clear but not crystal.

sorry to be a complete prat but what is a polyfilter?

would I be able to use a fluval 305 & a fluval 205 as i have the 205 spare from another tank, and the 305 is from the tank we will sell which is a fluval 260l tank. OR
would you keep the juwel filter that comes with the tank and add a fluval 305?

I would keep the juwel as it has a large turnover and a relatively good volume. Then add the 305, as much filtration as possible is always good.

Of course activated carbon is not useless, if it was i am sure there would be more people arguing the point.

Chris

Polyfilter is a filter material coated in a chemical substance that works in the same way as activated carbon. This material has to be removed after a certain amount of usage as it will start to leach the substances back into the water.

The reason i use pond filter floss is that it is so much cheaper and if you have any medications that need to be removed then place some activated carbon in the filter to remove them. When the tank is clear you remove the carbon from the filter, dry it and stick it into an airtight bag until you need to use it again.

Maybe you should actually know the product that you are trying to argue about before you open your mouth. Polyfilter is nothing like carbon and the majority of people do not use it all carbon is, is a money making ploy that aquatic companies tell you you need.

And I quote
The Unique
PolyFilter

The Polyfilter ia a unique invention for chemically filtering and purifying both fresh and salt water aquaria.Polyfilter is a formulation of a special patented material bonded to a synthetic matrix, which will adsord and absorb contaminants and other toxic material which are found in nature aor which are added to fresh and salt water aquaria
Outstanding features: Benefits:

* Manufactured specifically for aquarium use * Totally non-toxic and uniform in performance

* Easily cut to any size and shape * Fits any type and size of filter
* Changes colour as it adsorbs chemicals *Clearly demonstrates when it needs to be replaced
* Totally dependable ,even variable water parameteres will not affect polyfilters * Will not release impurities back into aquarium water

*Guaranteed to remove copper based medications from salt water * After just 72 hours use an aquarium can be stocked with inverterbrates
Polyfilter removes:
Ammonia/Ammonium * Nitrite * Nitrate* Copper*Formalin*Chelated Copper * Phosphate * Antibiotics * Amino-Acids * Dyes * Proteins * Toxic Metals* Phenols * Insecticides (including Pyrethrum)

Look, If you would like a sample of my water using floss and carbon when required i will be more than happy to send you some.

Back on topic, signman. The juwel filters are designed to be adequate to stock your aquarium, adding another external will give you the option to stock messy feeders or those that produce a lot of waste. All filters will remove large debris its just the smaller stuff that causes a dusty appearance.

I think also the fact that mark7616 has forgotten to mention that he also uses a UV steriliser which will remove suspended algae traces and small particles in the water.

A UV steriliser doesnt remove small paricles in the water mate.

Yes it does. UV will break down organic matter and the bonds between them.

I am talking about extremely small particles, not a huge pile of plec s**t.

surely a UV will jus kill pathogensand bacteria, particles (no matter how small) will just pass over it and back into the tank.

As mentioned a layer of filter wool will effectively remove these small particles

Adam

I wasnt talking about filter wool chris was but its w waste of time I use polyfilter to polish my water a uv is just a light so doesnt take any particles from the water.

UV breaks the bonds in the particles and allows them to either be disolved or become so small they are unnoticeable to our eye. I never suggested that small particulate material such as fecal matter/sand/detritus would be completely broken down by a UV filter.

I agree that polyfilter is a good product, i also believe that floss/carbon mix is an excellent method.

It is my preference to use floss and carbon as that is the method i am most convinced with.

Chris

can I put polyfilter in the fluval filter?

so I could use floss & carbon also. the fluval already comes with carbon in porus bags, is that the carbon you are talking about?

thanks

Yep thats it, you can buy replacement carbon in boxes from your LFS if you ever need it. Its probably easier for you to keep the floss externally, if you want to rinse it you can carry the whole filter to the sink, minus pipes. Stops water dripping on the carpet the entire way to the kitchen, lol.
