I have told people thet I am buying jewel rio 400 tank, and they have said tank is great, but filter is inadeqaute. Can I please have some advice or experiences. I have 5 Fluval tanks, which I have always stuck with the brand, but due to cost issues, the jewel rio 400 is the cheapest way of me getting a 5ft tank

thank you in advance

£450.00 i am paying for this one - and it's local. Maidenhead is only 3 miles away.. coming in Tuesday next wk.

just curious about the filter and whether i should change / modify filter

I have a Juwel 400 & removed the internal filter and now use 2 rena xp3's, always use 2 filters just in case one breaks and the internal looks ugly and takes up space + externals take more media

Get a Fluval FX5 and get some decent internals the eheim 2252`s are great and depending weather or not you can afford and extra 12 a month fill the internal with polyfilter to polish your water. Polyfilter is the nuts mate and you can see the difference staright away. I have 3 compartments on my 2252`s I have the bottom ones with the eheim sponge and have the top 2 filled with polyfilter. So I use for sheets every 4 weeks but my water is pristine. I also use 2 fluval fx5 externals and a uv steriliser.

Polyfilter.

One of the 2252`s you can see the 3 baskets these are the best internals you can buy. imo.

Hope that helps you out on the filtration side my fx5`s are just crammed with ceramic rings nothing else then use an internal or 2 to polish the water.

thank you for all your posts. it seems like i will probably go for a fluval 405 or the fx5. thanks again

What fish are you going to keep in there. I would be careful with the throughput of the FX5's as they will create a huge current, of course they can be turned down to reduce it.

I can vouch for polyfilter but I REALLY recommend Pond Floss. It really is brilliant stuff. It will take all matter of muck out of the water and really does work wonders. Also you can just wash it out and place it back into the filter. I only ever rebuy it when its falling apart.

Pondfloss is just pollywool which is nothing like polyfilter. Polyfilter strips meds tannins etc out of water and has chemicals on it.

I know there is a difference between them. I was talking about suspended particles in the water and how effective floss is for that. If you want to remove junk in the water, tannins, medications etc the use of activated carbon in the filter is my preferred method as it can be removed without disturbing any muck that has gathered on the floss.
