I've got fish experience, but none on buying hoods and lighting.

I'm just looking for an attractive black hood for my 10 gallon.
I don't need lighting for plants, since I'm getting artificial lights, but I was wondering if someone could recommend a really nice bulb that gives good, white light (that fits in the 10 gallon hood that I decide on)?

It's so confusing. :p

The light color is up to your own tastes. A 5500K light gives off a spectrum that is centered around the same place as natural sunlight at noon. It looks slightly yellow to most people but is a "natural" color for the tank and fish. A warm white or cool white will have a color around 2300K to 2700K and will seem quite yellow to most people. The 6700K lamp is slightly whiter at a glance than the 5500K and is the one that I like in my unplanted or planted tanks. Once you get to 10000K the light starts to take on a slightly bluish hue but is still close enough to neutral to look white to most people. To me the 10000K looks like a harsh white, as opposed to a softer white.
I would go to a store that has lighting on display and look at the colors they throw to decide what you like. In the US, light tubes also have a CRI number on the packaging for each tube. CRI is color rendering index and is supposed to tell you how true the color of things lit by the light will look compared to the same object seen outdoors in sunlight. A CRI of under 88 is terrible but one over about 93 is never to be found for sale in a store.
