hey

i am going to become the proud owner of a betta 2moz (YAY)
and i thought i would drop into the best place for some advice first

what are the signs i should look for for a healthy happy betta?

is there any difference between colours, fin shapes ect ect apart from appearances?

what is normal betta behaviour?

And finaly what do you think makes a betta special?

i have done all the hard work now i want to enjoy him :D

sometime in the future i plan on getting some endlers to share a tank with him, will they get on?

thanx everybody, will hopefully (if i do get one) post pics of hims 2moz

bye bye

Hi - If I could offer once piece of advice, which which was given to me whilst I was out looking for my betta is not to buy the first one that you see and like! - (I'm greaful for the advice too!) It's not likely that you will see any of the more uncommon veriety of bettas at your LFS (Local fish store) - but you may get lucky I was, and find one - if you shop around a bit.

Yes there is a difference between and fins and colours if you check out this link you will see the different verieties of bettas, http://www.fishforums.net/content/Bettas/6...tta-Tail-Types/ most of which unless you are lucky like I was :p you won't find at your LFS and will have to check out the breeder sites.

here are some breeder sites that I know of - and plenty of options of the more uncommon verieties - there are people on the forum that breed bettas too, they will tell you who they are if you are interested.

Good luck with finding your betta :)

for me when i bought liv, he was the most eger one to come home with me. he followed me around until i picked up his jars. my brothers advice was to look for bubbles to see if the betta is happy and healthy.

as for rayne i felt bad because the other female bettas were trying to kill him/her (i am going with shim for now) go with your insticts. even though i lost liv after three months, i still wouldn't trade thoughs three months. he was a great fish for a little vail tail and he will be missed.

thanx

he will have a happy home in a planted 6.6gal

so i should use common sense as to whether it looks healthy, and for the one i choose follow my instincts

i am travellin around 40 miles to get him so hopefully one will catch my eye,if not i am gettin some endlers (and will then get chased out of this section with flaming torchs and pitchforks lol) will post what happens later

When choosing your betta be very careful about blackened, completely clear or 'frizzy' edges on the fins - if the extended rays on a crowntail are clear and jelly-ish looking or another strain has frizzy fins (or any strain has fins with black edges) don't buy. It's finrot, caused by longterm exposure to high levels of toxic organic compounds from living in a cup. It's hard to fix.

it very unusual to see bettas in cups in the UK
thats not to say its much better most places, usually either in floating traps in other tanks (or worse, loose in other tanks being nipped to hell!) or in centralised filtered box systems (which can spread disease between fish quickly)

yep i got him :hyper:
jus been busy getting him settled so i havnt been online all day.
i have tried getting a pic on my phone but he wont stay still long enough so i am borrowing my girlfriends digi camera 2moz.

He is a very handsome black head with metalic blu/indigo body and has a crown tail
the others were a metalic blue with a fin that looked a bit split
and purple/pink one but it just didnt tickle my fancy.
i even nearly got tempted into buying some 5 banded barbs instead
i got the best one by far!!!
i ended up getting him 3 tankmates in the form of 3 cherry shrimps
i was a little worried he would gobble them up as i had recived a rather mixed opinion on them when i asked here a while ag, but its all good so far

still hasnt been named but i will post a pic 2moz

i picked up some freeze dried bloodworm and someTetra pro colour flakes that aparantly will help his colour develop
are these cool for him or can anybody recomend a better type of food?

my shrimps have algea waffers but they are busy cleaning the algea from the tank cycle at the moment lol

YAY BETTA BETTA BETTA

i got them pellets earlier
i fed him with a mix of them and the flake food
he kinda took a nibble of the flake and spat the rest out,as for the betta pellets he kept spitting them out till they were a bit mushy them ate them.
is this normal?
gonna give him bloodworm every sunday and clean out on mondays
he is such a little ***** to get a photo of lol
gonna add a few more plants on monday, once its all complete i will post my pics :D

how terratorial are they because he has staked out the cave as his turf and chases all the shrimps away lol
its fun watchin how they interact with each other
so glad i got one :good:

if he gets some endler friends will they nip him
if not i am thinkin of a school of white clouds

I had white clouds in with one of my bettas. It wasn't a good idea, the white clouds are bad about nipping at the bettas fins. the betta would chase the white clouds, the white clouds would get away, then the white clouds would come up ehind the betta and nip at his fins. I relocated the white clouds before they did any damage to his tail. Fun to watch the first time but for the sake of the bettas tail not good to let go on for very long.

You could let the pellets sit in a cup full of tank water before feeding them to your Betta. I do this with my german blue rams, I let the pellets sit in a small cup of tank water for a minute or two and then pour it into the tank.

i finaly got some pics of him
they are not great but better than nothing
