This was bought up on another forum, just wanted to give guys here a heads up.

Tests found cryptosporidium in a sample from supplies to Northampton, Daventry and surrounding villages.

The parasite causes stomach upsets and the most common symptom is diarrhoea.

Full story in link above.

Not sure of the effect on fish, but best to be cautious if water changing over the next few days.

Thanks for that, I've got family up that way. Anyone who lives in the affected area should seriously think about boiling any water before they add it.

Either that, or possibly treat with some form of anti-bacterial treatment. (Not sure that would work mind-personally, I'd boil it all.)

That or you could use one of those little water filters used for backpacking. Most (all good ones) will filter out that stuff.

They're designed to catch physical media, not bacteria - to kill the bacteria you need to chemically treat them.

And incidentally they take forever for a small quantity of water to filter through.

Actually, they do filter out bacteria. I have an MSR Miniworks EX and it filters out giardia, crypto, and other stuff. It can pump about a litre a minute so using it for purifying drinking water is perfectly feasable.
