Hi, in my 2ft tank I have blue neons, tiger barbs, a small catfish and an otto. Over the last couple of weeks two of my fish have dissappeared completley. One neon, could have died an been eaten I suppose, and one tiger barb, which has arose my suspicion. Also latelt there seems to be a lot of bubbles forming on the top of the water. Enough to be worried about. Does anyone have an idea what these might be?

i'm not too sure about the breeding patterns of the fish you have, but some fish build a 'bubble nest', which could be what these bubbles are. from waht i can gather, it could be the catfish.

here is some info on bubble nests

it is quite possible that these fish have died and been eaten, have you done a water test, what are the stats..? is this a new tank?
also some fish are quite capable of jumping fully out of the tank, you'd be surprised at the tiny gaps they manage to get out of, i'd check around your tank, and remember that fish can flip away from the tank, so if it has jumped he may not even be near the tank.

er.. not sure the catfish would breed as its on its own!!!!

The bubbles could be from pollutants in the water, if you think of it, polluted rivers and streams will often have that nasty creamy-yellow foam around, you could have a mild version of that (particularly if there's a couple of fishy corpses somewhere in the tank).

I've had a rosy tetra completely disappear in the past, never found a sign of the corpse in the tank or on the floor; I don't think its really that unusual. The fish could've died then been artially eaten afterwards; little corpses in warm water that have been have-eaten would rot away fairly fast.

I'd suggest water changes, check your filter, vac the gravel, and keep an eye on things.

i'm not so sure, we had a lone paradise fish, who kept creating bubble nests!!

but i think you are probably right, it probably is something a little more sinister than a bubble nest! although there was no mention of a bad smell which i would imagine would accompany a decaying fishie!

Do you have lots of plants or lots of algae ?

Well... the catfish is unidentified, but I haven't come accross ANY catfish that make bubble nests.

uhm quite. I think the catfish can very safely be ruled out

Bubble-Nest Builders: Betta Splendens (Siamese Fighting Fish), Gouramis, some Sunfish, some Cichlids, and a few Catfish

still dunno how to quote things.. but that is what the website said!

Very interesting indeed - you got me looking.
You are indeed right - though to be honest, I would still sincerely doubt that it's the catfish.

But out of interest, the Hoplosternum littorale is one catfish that makes a bubble nest.

Further Planet Catfish report on the Porthole Catfish - Dianema longibarbis and quote :

This and its only other congener, D. urostriatum (the Flag Tailed Porthole Catfish) have been the subject of fleeting reports of bubble nest building or sexual dimorphism but spawning accounts are hard to come by.

eww.. the one the guy is holding looks gross!!!!
but the second one looks exactly like the nest my paradise fish used to make. :)

hope that it is the cat fish making a nest.. a much nicer thought than a poor little guy slowly going bad in teh bottom of the tank!
