Hi, extreamly new to the hobby, i have a male betta and he seems happy in his tank, so much so that he is making bubble nests all the time. I have been scanning this section and i cant find what im looking for.

With him building the nests am i being cruel to him by not giving him a mate? or is this just something they do all the time?

I would hate to think i am denying him the pleasure of a sexy female to pleasure him :hey:

No you're not being cruel. They do it quite often, some don't bother at all.

Do not be tempted to add a female. They do not co-exist peacefully in pairs and will rip eachother apart. They only come together to wrap/mate and even that isn't exactly a gentle process most of the time. Plus the resulting young ( which can number over 100 ) need to be eventually separated into individual tanks all of which need very dilligent water care .

Making a bubblenest often means the betta is pretty content and relaxed with his surroundings (though not always) so don't feel you're doing him a dis-service by not giving him a girlfriend, he'll be fine.

Bubble nesting is an instict male bettas can have. If you don't have a way to house and tend to all the baby bettas, than that would be much more cruel. And, yep, male and female bettas cannot co-exist together. If you do want to breed, you'd take the female betta and plop her in the tank with the male and bubble nest and let them do their thing and then you'd take her right back out.

well as long as he is happy being celibate then thats ok. Just kind of feel sorry for the little guy

well, he's got you to hang out with right?

anyway you'd feel worse seeing him stress from fighting, or otherwise dealing with intruders in his territory. you've got to just understand that it's whats best, and he'll be far more likely to live a long healthy happy live on his own =)

Well thanks to all of you for your advice, it's the wife with all her comments like "awwwwww he wants to have babies" that keep getting me thinking, but i will put her right and let her know that he is content with being single. :good:
