Ok so i got some wood yesterday from pets at home (Mopani Root Decor Wood by Tropix) so i rinsed the wood left it soak all the crap come off it. So i added it a few hours later all looking good. Got up this morning and my water has gone a brownish colour.

Will this colour settler or will i need to do a water change.

Also my angel fish is now staying at the top of the tank. But my neons seem to have finally come out of hiding

I find that the tannins are actually beneficial for South American fish, such as angels and neons.

They will go with time and water changes (I wouldn't change anything, if it was me), but you can speed up the process with more regular water changes and addition of activated carbon to the filter.

Good afternoon Swanseastilo...

My current 110L has a 50cm piece of bog-wood in it. When it first went in. the water looked like weak tea. I have done 4 x 40% W/C's over the past couple of weeks (still in my 'Qualifying Week') and the water has nearly gone clear. It is a nice effect, but too much looks bad, in my humble opinion.

Regards,
Terry. (Port Talbot)

Hey terry ur right it is a nice effect but it does look bad with to much saddely its affected my angel fish who was coming on good

i've got about 9 bits of bogwood in my tank and although the water is slightly discouloured you can only tell by looking through the length of the tank and not from the front. the tannins are hugely beneficial for the fish and the natural look it provides is ace. the one mistake i think y ou made was boiling the wood, you just losened it up allowing more tannins to leak out. all you need to do is scrub them under a hot tap and leave them to soak for a week, then bosh them into the tank.

Cheers i remove the wood ill leave it soak for A week then try re adding it

Any wood worth having will release tannins into the water. The brown water color is only a problem for people, not for fish. All of my tanks that have natural wood in them are somewhat brown in color. Some show far more color than others, which partly reflects how long the wood has been in the tank. The ones with wood that is fairly new, less than a few months, turn a brown color quite quickly. The ones with wood in it for over a year only get a slight tinge of brown before I clear it up with a water change. Either way, the fish don't seem to notice.
