I'm unsure as to what the name of the plant is in the far left corner of my tank (see sig) but at first it seemed to be flourishing at first. However, now some of the leaves are browning and see-through. I add liquid fertiliser on a weekly basis after a water change. I have had this happen with my amazon swords as well, I ended up throwing them away because they looked so manky, yet the roots were really good on them.

What can I do to prevent browning leaves that go holey, and what causes it?
Also, the plant in the middle of my tank is far higher now, but all of the middle section seems to be wilting and dying off. I keep having to pull the leaves off of the top of the tank where they have fell off and just float about. the top of the plant is growing great, although it is obviously higher to the light and so it has a lot of hairy algae on it at the moment. Why is the middle not doing so well? Lack of light?

Thanks.

Sounds like lack of co2 tbh.
Dosing a liquid carbon should sort this but you will need to dose a good macro and micro fert daily along side it.
All liquid ferts should be dosed daily not weekly so this also wont be helping.
Water changes should be done after lights out as tap water contain tones of dissolved co2 which will give you fluctuations which along with a lack of nutrients will be the cause of your algae problem.

What liquids would you recommend that I add? At the moment I am just adding AquaGro Nutrafeed on a weekly basis as that is what the bottle instructions say.

I would much rather use a liquid co2 as I am completely useless! What is a good one?

Also, do you know the name of the plant in the far left corner? It reminds me of a Lily pads!

I forgot to ask also, whats the size of your tank and what is your filters lph output?

Well it looks like aquagro nutrafeed does actually contain both macro and micro nutrients you need which is a good start.
So thats fine. But I would dose daily not weekly as I said before. Just divide what your dosing now by 7 and dose that daily.

As for liquid co2, there is Easycarbo and Seachem Florish

I prefer easycarbo myself.
This also needs to be dosed daily without fail preferably an hour or 2 before lights on.
This stuff aint cheap but it lasts forever as dosing is something like 1ml per 50L
Im confident this will cure your your deficiency and algae problem assuming you have good flow.

As for the plant. Do you have a clearer pic of it? I may be able to identify it. If not someone else definately will.

I will get another bottle of the Nutrafeed then once mine has ran out which be shortly if I am dosing everyday.
I have also just picked up a 500ml bottle of the easycarbo from my LFS for £12, is that a fair price?

My tank is a 125 litre Fluval Rio, I have no idea about the output of my filter. It is a Fluval u4?

Will the combination of using these restore my current plants to full heath as well?

I haven't got a clear photo of the plant to hand but later on when the lights are on and after my weekly water change I shall take a pic and upload it to see if anyone can give me a hand!

I believe so yes.
if your getting towards the end of your nutrafeed bottle, you might want to try TPN+
I hear thats an excellent macro and micro fertiliser. Alot of hobbiest on here use it and iv heard some amazing things about it.
Or you could make your own ferts which is exactly what i do. Its pretty much thee most cost effective way to dose ferts, and its very good quality stuff too.
You can buy the kit here
http://www.aquariumplantfood.co.uk/fertilisers/dry-chemicals/starter-kits/ei-starter-kit.html
It will come with full instructions on how to make and mix your own ferts and how to dose and it will last well over a year for a tank your size, and thats dosing daily.
This is what most people who inject gas using the EI method use. They really are fantastic products

As for flow, your filter is 1000LPH which is a little under the sweet spot but you should be fine.
Do you have your lights on a timer? and how long is your photoperiod?

Oh and cut away any manky dead leafs you have and expect to wait a couple of weeks at least before seeing results
yes.gif

Hope iv been some help

Yeah my lights are timed. They come on at 3pm and go off at 11pm so are on for 8 hours a day.

I have just done some clipping back of the dead manly leaves and the ones that are browning so I shall definitely take on board what you have said and look into the products you have suggested.

Yes you have been more than helpful, thanks very much for your timely replies :)

How old is the one on the left?

The one on the far left I have had probably for around 2 months? Maybe a little longer, I'm not sure.
