Hi all

I have had my tank set up and running since the start of April (set up straight away with fish and mature media from old tank) and i am having a problem with brown algea. I just cant seem to shift it. Have had it about 2 months now and it shows no signs of slowing.

Water stats are,

Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0 and Nitrates - 20. Water is changed regular. Mostly twice a week at 20% a time, sometimes 50%, sometimes just a quick 10 %, but always at least 20% is changed over the period of a week, most of the time its more.

Last week when it was a bit warm i had the lights off for a few days and this seems to have caused a boom in it all. Is there any way to stop it?

Thanks

woudl you have room for a pair of flying foxes? Great looking fish and good with the bad stuff. I think Loachs (NOT clown unless you've really got room!) are good too.

Without introducing fish I seem to remember that people talk about reducing light and reducing feeding the fish...

I'm sure someone with more actual experience wil be along soon :)

i have the same problem with brown alea in my 65ltr. i have just put a small bristlenose in there from my 300ltr tank and in 5 hours he has munched through quite a lot. you can see big clean patches on the rocks.

i would say get a plec

I have just checked and he has cleared loads! There is also a massive amount of poo but to be honest it's easier to siphon that up than clean the brown off myself

Cheers guys, tried plecs before, had two bn's. To be honest i just couldnt handle the poo, i was gravel vac'ing every day, it really stood out on the black sand :hyper:

i have had to hoover up the poo every other day in the 65ltr i put the bristlenose in, this is because he is eating so much brown algea.

i would rather vaccume up poo than look at brown algea.

also i am wonderign why black poo looks so bad on the black sand, surely its worse on white or normal sand.
