Mine had diatoms for 6 months or more 
An apple snail will eat diatoms too, could grab one and see how it gets on. They certainly cleared my tank.
The problem with diatoms, once it clears up (and it will) your algae eater will be stuck with no food, so you have to then substitute/feed it yourself with a good algae wafer.
