I have a problem with brown algae which may be Diatom. I completed a fishless cycle around 6 weeks ago and for the last 3 weeks have been seeing an increase in brown algae. Whilst doing some research it seems that my choice of playsand as a subsrate may be the cause as it apparantly has a high silicate content. It is freely recommended on TFF though.

I´m looking for a way to get things under control. I am loathe to use chemicals but does anyone have a solution to my problem?

it is commonin new set ups, it can last up to 3 months IME but eventually it will go. You could get a group of ottos to help if you wish? I use playsand and dont get it

Ah thanks Aaron. I have seen advertised Diatom filters, do you think they are worth a shot. My plants are having a hard time at the moment.

not at the moment, just let it go on its own. Keep cleaning it off, it shouldnt cause problems to your plants unless it is on their leaves and blocking light.

Thanks for the reply Aaron. I guess I´ll sit it out but I´m going to loose the plants I think. The leaves are covered badly. I do manage to keep the glass and hardware clear though.

Thanks again.
