Yesterday my brother spat twice in my tank when he was sucking on the end of a hose trying to get the water flow from the tank. Do you think that this could be a health problem to my tank? I did a 35% waterchange (as I was doing that anyways) but I just think that spitting into the tank is totally gross! Poor fish...

(it is a 50 gallon tank with a moonlight gourami, opaline gourami, 2 small bala shark, silver-tip shark, pictus catfish, an otocnclus, dwarf pleco, 5' pleco, and 7 angles-I'm removating the fish room so it is a temporary set up)

Ok, just thought I'd share

Can't see it doing any damage, afterall we only have enzymes and bacteria in our mouth, which will probably be broken down by the bacteria already in the water.

Just give you brother a slap for being so disgusting

ya the slap will work, but i understand why he spits, when sucking on the end of the hose, it is probabaly one of the most disgusting tastes out there. It's just that i spit into the bucket near me. LOL

FYI - for those that don't have the convenience of using an battery operated syphon, you can do the following.

Submerse one end in the water and try to get as much water as possible in the tubing (the more the better it will work)
Cap your thumb over the submerged end and remove from water (making sure that uncovered end is at same level.
Put the uncovered end in the water and the covered end in your bucket which should be lower than the tank.
Take your thumb off the end and the syphon should start itself.

There you go no more spitting or swallowing accidents ;)

Thats good advice Liliano......its exactly how we do it......I would never suck on the hose.....yuck!! :alien:

I never find the "submerse to start" method very good... I just give it a good old suck and make sure i time it right so I get no water in my mouth.

i've tried that before, but i can never get it to work

My syphon self starts anyway. all I have to do is pump it up and down a couple of times, and hey presto; off we go!!!

I submerse both ends of my syphon/vacuum until the whole length is filled with water. Then I cover the hose end with my index finger, take it out of the water, put it in a bucket, leaving the larger diameter end unerwater. Then I release my finger from the hose end, and the flow starts the moment I release my finger.

the more water you have in the the better it is - just give it a good shake on the submerged end (up and down)

or

do the same as Panther1505 - its good advise

There is a way to siphon by sucking on the hose without getting any in your mouth. U have to do this with a clear hose. Put 1 end in the tank and make sure that the rest of the hose slowly slopes DOWN from the tank. Start quickly sucking till you see the water start to some down towards you. Immediately stop sucking after it reaches the midway point and you got it. I do that when I was setting up a dripper for increasing the salinity. Worked great. Whenever I'm cleaning though, I fill the entire hose with water then cap one end and throw it outside.

P.S. The worst tasting stuff ever has got to be brake fluid. Will taste nastier then any but the dirtiest tank water.
