I regularly feed my malawi cichlids with brine shrimp and hikari gold and staple with no problems i always try to give them a varied diet.
There are other foods that can be given such as flakes, sticks, dried foods etc.

Alot of protein in mbuna can cause "Malawi bloat". Feeding them this every now and then shouldn't hurt. Keep in mind brine shrimp has little nutritional value, unless it's fortified. It should be more of a treat than a staple in their diet.

So, then i shouldnt be feeding them it? The article is contradicting what i have been told, so im slightly confused. I feed them a pellet that has 60 percent protien, and Mysis Shrimp ( 60 percent protien) every day. I dont ahve anything else ( all my other food was so old it was all crumbly, so i threw it out). Should i purchase something with, idk, less protien? I asked the guy if the pellets were okay and he said yes, thats very similar to what he feeds them to grow them up m( this is , in fact, chiclid growth formula pellets, very good quality). If i do get new food, it wont be till next Sat. or later ( there is a auction next sat.) . I cant afford all the food from petstores, to over priced.

I was worried about Mbuna Bloat, but after a week of this diet, they seem to be having no problem. The Brine Shrimp isnt fortified, its natural, so not much nutrients, they just enjoy the flavour( you should ahve seen them!).

Well, is it vegetable protein or meaty protein? I would imagine the mysis is meaty(as well as the brine).

If you can, get a spirulina food for algae grazers.

something like this:

Also, you can get sheets of Nori and break them up or clip them on a veggie clip in the tank. (Nori is commonly used for salty tanks but can be used for any algae grazers. I give it to my fish now also....basically it's seaweed. It's also eaten by people. Sold in lfs and grocery stores. Cheaper in the grocery stores. If you could get some, make sure that it's not flavored stuff. Just dried/roasted seaweed)

Idk if its aniaml protien or not. This is what it says.

CHICHLID FORMULA 1/8"
PROTIEN- 40% FAT-10%
FIBER-2% MOISTURE-9%

INGREDIENTS: Fish Meal, Corn Gluten, Wheat Flour, Fish Oil, Blood Meal, Vitamin A Accetate, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12.

I would give you a link to the site , but it dosent ahve one. I bought it at a Auction ( 6 0z. in a bag).

That sounds like a Carnivore cichlid mix - not really suitable for most Africans - you are better buying products specifically formulated for Herbivores and Omnivores, preferrably something with a high Spirulina content. :good:
