Figured I should start a new topic for the new tank. To see the build up to this system, check out the old thread: Brian's Marine World

Its a used 90G purchased from a local reefer. 30G breeder for a sump/fuge. Equipment includes:

  • Reef Octopus 150 Recirculating skimmer
  • 4 x 54W T5 fixture with 175W halides to come
  • 2 x Koralia 4's (2 more to be purchased) with a Red Sea oceans motion controller
  • Mag9.5 for a return pump
  • Phosban reactor
  • One 200W and one 300W heater

Roughly 90lbs of rock will create the aquscape.

Corals will be predominantly LPS with a few softies and sps mixed in. These will include euphylias, echinos, ricordeas, and lords.

Fish will include: Perc clown, yellow fairy wrasse, 2 engineer gobies (not sure if keeping yet), 4 to 6 green chromis, a single pink square anthias (hopefully)

Don't want too many fish, looking to keep fish wastes down and for the tank to ne focused on coral.

Here are some build pics so far:

Tank was pretty clean of coarline from the great job the previous owner did to clean it for me, but there was still a good amount of smudges and film build up, but after a first cleaning, the tank looks pretty good. Also, middle bulkhead is return and will have a split Y of locline to disperse return flow:

Holes cut into the eggcrate to fit overflows:

Sump and Plumbing. Sump will only have two sections, a refuge (macro, LR rubble) and a return section (filter sock and return pump), sump off to side because does not fit under stand:

Incase your wondering too, plan on changing the pipe support from the nylon rope... used as support while glueing up everything. Might build a wood framework in the future that could house a frag tank on top of it.

And the future RO corner. Have to tap into water line and the unit will hang above the sink and feed into a 44G brute trash can:

More updates to come after freswater test and aquascaping.

Thanks, Brian

Nice lookin stand, and a unique tank. Who'd you get that from?

One word of caution, beware those overflows, they're a good case of hair algae away from a very wet basement floor ;)

A guy in irondeqouit who was getting out of the hobby due to money issues I believe.

Ya, I hear ya, but both the heads in the tank, and the stand pipe caps arn't glued, so along with the unions, the pipe can be flushed and cleaned pretty easily for periodic maintenance. I do like how they dont take up a ton of room in the tank like a typical overflow box.

my overflows are a bit like that. mine are covered with a mesh though so i can get them off and wash them easily. Maybe an idea to switch to that if yours dont work well. That egg crate lid may leave you with shadows aswel.

Nice size though....what stocking plans do you have?

Can you not have both overflows going into the sump and run the skimmer out of there instead. Then if one of the overflows blocks the other one will still be ok and your display tank wont flood. Other than losing a little space in your sump (maybe, depends on your skimmer) I cant see any other downside to it and would be a bit safer.

Looks good though, will be watching as things progress :)

I'm not too worried about the overflows plugging guys. Thanks for the concerns though. As said before, a couple of the pieces are unglued for each and there are unions for each overflow about 1-2' from the bulkheads so maintenance will be no prob.

I have the skimmer isolated off of the one overflow so I dont have to feed it with another pump that would use more electricity. The skimmer is a recirc style so you need to feed with either part of the overflow or a pump as the pump attached to the skimmer is just to create bubbles and turbulence in the skimmer body. If this was a straight needlewheel skimmer, I would put it into the sump, but I didnt want the skimmer sitting in the sump, I like it being external.

And the eggcrate is fine with shaddowing, already had a 4 bulb PC fixture on there and there was no shaddowing across the tank bottom.... when everything is set-up and aquascaped, if I think not enough light is being dispersed, then I will remake these covers using some large gap screening that I have.... but I need to have a cover for this tank. I lost my male yellow fairy wrasse in the 55G when he went carpet surfing one night and with adding the anthias to this tank, not about to risk losing another beautiful fish.

Thanks, Brian

EDIT: Ben, from OP:

Fish will include: Perc clown, yellow fairy wrasse, 2 engineer gobies (not sure if keeping yet), 4 to 6 green chromis, a single pink square anthias (hopefully)

Corals will be predominantly LPS with a few softies and sps mixed in. These will include euphylias, echinos, ricordeas, and lords

Check out the new nano!!!

Just kidding, its actually a QT tank for some new stock for the 90G:

The tank is a 10G with a piece of LR I was using to cure some new shelf rock for the new tank with a maxi 1200 and a 20W PC fixture. Hopefully this light will be enough for the cap for the time being.... if not, might have to move to the 55G before The move to the 90G:

Can't wait to start moving things over to the 90G, currently doing a freshwater test to make sure of no leaks and the overall flow of the pipework... if all goes well in a week, then I can start filling with Saltwater and start moving house :hyper:

Thanks, Brian

Love the Cromis, cracking fish. Will be great to see them swimming against a rockwork back-drop in the main tank

I know you said you aren't bothered, but I'll add to the concerns of those above re-overflows. At work there are five marine systems, with two display tanks and a sump, and at least one a week will overflow when the drains block... I know you aren't worried about it, but I would be. I'd look to see if you can't get some larger guards, or find some way of making an emergency drain that is not covered in any way :good:

I cannot wait for this to be running, it should be a good set-up

Following with interest

well with all the concerns, maybe this is something to worry about... I do have an acrylic CPR overflow that I could pumb in so that if something does plug, this could kick in until I can remove the blockage, idk, we'll have to see as time progresses. Thanks for the input guys

Haha, ya, no probs KJ... that was about 10 min after being in the tank... he is out swimming around and hungrily eating up mysis along with the chromis.... need to take a pic of his beautiful coloration for you all :good:

$60.00 US. But I think its a deal after seeing two females of the same species at about 2/3's his size for $75.00 each yesterday :good:
