im wanting to try my hand at breeding fish. ive done the live bearer thing with mollys but wanted to try egg layers, nothing too tricky for now. anyone have any suggestions for fish to try.

i have a spare tank ive just cycled ready, 2ftx1ft

that would only be the nursery, i have a 5ftx2ftx2ft. would you still recommended the cichlids?
thanks alot

Either tank would be ok for breeding Apistogrammas.
For the 5ft, you have a lot more options.
Would you like to breed Cichlids? If so, what type do you really like?

kribs breed quite easily but can be a bit rough sometimes, so they need quick/robust tankmates
apistos are great too, im getting a trio of cockatoos in a few months

sounds good. how do you go about breeding them, do you just get a male and a female and leave them in a tank together or is there more to it, id imagine there is.
thanks

get water down to ph 6.5-7.0 and medium hardness

get some coconut shells with some small entrance holes for the females, stick some java moss outside the entrance and add cockatoos

one male per tank, and he likes a hareem of at least 2 females

planted tank is ideal, but not ridiculously thick, have open space

some dither fish are quite handy to have as it gives the parents something to chase away from the babies (id reccomend some of the medium sized tetras, e.g. rosy, diamond, lemon, black phantom, etc)

any more questions?

tiger barbs are really easy to breed...they would fine in that size tank but you would need to take the parents out so they dont eat the eggs...

Convicts have been called the "just add water breeders" but they would be just like kribs...

is this in the catfish section for a reason?

if so, why not try some corydoras?
although, personally i would also try with some easier cichlids first. apisto cacatuoides are beautiful fish! they're pretty easy to breed as you wouldn't necasserily have to intervene. however, they most probably won't get it right for the first few times and, as with most cichlids, end up eating their eggs when the lights go out.

pink.

Hi AndrewHobday

I don't know how this thread ended up in Corydoras. Maybe one of the mods clicked the wrong link. I'm sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused you. I'll move it over to Tropical Discussion and my posting on it will raise it up to the top of the list again.

Of course, if you should decide on breeding corys, you know where to look for help. :D

Does anyone have any more suggestions?

corydoras of course, ive just had my first spawn from my peppered corydoras, im well chuffed, there in the isolation net with an airstone underneath,.

i believe the trick to getting them to spawn is

good quality fish
good water params
cool water changes in frequent amounts
and a low PH
