Okay title stated, we have kept bettas for over 6-7 years now, we sold our setup years ago and well getting back into breeding them again o_O
Question I have is what Happens when you mix a crowntail male with a vailtail female, the male I have currently is a Delta Mixed CT as far as I can tell maybe later I will post pics but kinda in a hurry and heading out the door, so my major question is how do you tell what the off spring will be when breeding outside the family example would be crowntail male with a vail tail female?

I understand how line breeding works just never done it where you introduce and start a new line any help would be appreciated, and for me to get a female the vails are easier to get and really cheap but all are vail tail, I can get other females its just a travel or need to be shipped to me

thanks

P.S he has a 40gal breeder tank all to himself lol

I would not reccommend breeding your female Viel-Tail. Viel-tail's are dominent so the chances of MOST/IF NOT ALL the fry being VT's is highly likely. I would invest in another tailed female, maybe another CT. Also VT's are seen as the lower grade betta, so the chances of selling them to make a profit are slim.

As for breeding, this is an extract from my website ( aquick guide, but please make sure you research fully);

BREEDING:- The decision of breeding bettas should not be taken lightly, it requires extensive research and much thought, time and money.
2 of the healthiest bettas should be used. Each betta will require conditioning; this is basically feeding them lots of live foods.

A spawning tank should be set up (5g-10g) with a heater set at 29C,and a sponge filter. The female should be put into a chimney until the male has built a bubble nest, after 2 days the female can be released.
After spawning takes place, remove the female immediately, the male might kill her if he feels threatened. 3 days later fry should be free swimming, it is now time to remove the male or he will eat them.

Whilst taking care of the fry, it is also important to check on the health of the parents, carry on feeding them live foods for 2 days or so before weaning them back onto dry food.

Feed the fry 3 times a day with high protein live food, micro worms, vinegar eels, baby Brine Shrimp are all excellent.
For the first 2 weeks tank should not be cleaned, but after this switch on the sponge filter and do daily water changes of around 50%. The fry will dramatically grow with water changes.

At around 6 weeks, start feeding fry dry food, along with the live cultures. By this time they will have developed their labyrinth organs. It’s now also the time to separate all the males into individual containers as they will start being aggressive. These containers should be 1l minimum, and daily water changes will need to be done. As there is no heater for these, they will need to be kept in a warm room.

At around 16 weeks they can be sold on.

A crowntail bred to a veiltail will most likely create combtails which are veiltails with short spikey projections to their tails, I have done this once but instead with a spadetail which is another variation of veiltail the veiltail is very difficult to breed out of a line because it is dominant.
Here is the resulting offspring from my cross:

I am not against breeding veiltails, since the IBC has finally set up a show class for them, and I think that more breeders show start working with them to enhance and perfect the look of the veiltail. But I would say that if you do plan on breeding either invest in a ct female or a vt male and breed pure, instead of mixing 2 tail types together! Feel free to pm me if you have any questions at all! I have been breeding for a long time and will happily help you in any way that I can :D

Edit: Betta Fish, I LOVE that second male, he is just too cute!

Not really what I had in mind for what I would think they would look like I guess eaither a CT or a Halfmoon female for it then, btw the male I have is HM/CT mix actually looks kinda amazing well its a delta not a halfmoon mix, only issue Is i can't find a store that has a halfmoon or ct female so guess I will have to have one or 2 shipped in :(

Well made my mind up definitly not going for the combtail, did some research and found a good supplier of halfmoon. I am going with the dragon breed. The ones I am going for today are the silver and white dragon halfmoons. I missed out on the red(orange)dragon pair but ended up getting a pair of halfmoon at a resonable price! Pictures soon to come :)

Hi theshadowinc,

I've just had a small spawn about 15, from CT male and a VT female ( not to sure on her though she may have some CT in her ). Topics down there somewhere, and I will be updating with more photos as and when they grow.

From what i've read they produce combtail, hope so cause they look nice.

So fingers crossed if you watch my tpoic you'll find out.

cool I will have to pay attention then, well got my fish today acutally ended up with 2 pair one that will be inbred and another that will not be inbred, both are dragon halfmoons. Pictures to come and I might do a journal on them getting them grown out for breeding project this winter. My tanks are coming in a few days for setup and cycling. They are home happy and sound and feeding. now its just time to grow out one of the males for the non inbred and the other 2 need about a month for grow out by then my breeding section should be setup and atleast cycled
1st pair is halfmoon with a delta female, second both are halfmoons :) still need to grow so finage will change for sure cause they are all house individually
