So I have a twenty gallon tank and am trying to breed guppies but I can’t figure out the perfect breeding set up. So like I said it’s a twenty gallon, sponge filter, live tank. So here are some options I’m thinking and you guys tell me which sounds best!!
Option:
1: Just throw them in there and let them do there stuff

2: I also have a separate 10 gallon) but males in separate tank and put female and babies in big tank and then throw in the male I hopefully want to breed with the others

3: put all parent guppies in other tank and when they look like they are going to pop out them in big tank where other fry already are

4: put fry in other tank when ready and put all parents in big tank

5: don’t really have an option here but just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas

So y’all please help me out go ahead and tell me what you think is going to be best

Why are you trying to breed? If its for commercial reasons you want a disciplined approach, but if you just want more guppies option 1 is fine. You will soon have hundreds of guppies - so make sure you know where they will go.

@emeraldking is our resident helper for those who linebreed for specific traits. He's a brilliant livebearer keeper who will hopefully see this AFTER you've added more info.

What are you trying to do, as @seangee asked. That's crucial to how anyone can answer.
Do you run planted aquariums?
Do you run single species aquariums, or communities?
Do have extra tankspace above 10 gallons for rearing young guppies, or are you trying to do everything in one tank?

Just put the females in the big tank and have lots of plants in it. Water Sprite is a good floating plant and has plenty of places for baby fish to hide. Feed the mums well 3-5 times a day. Do big regular water changes and gravel cleans to keep the tank clean. Leave the mums to give birth and use a cup to scoop the babies out and move them into a rearing tank.

Live bearer math can get ugly fast. The females cab store the male's sperm and have multiple spawns from a single contact. Then there is the fact that babies get to the point of being able to reproduce really quickly.

Common guppies greatest value is as feeders. Unless you are planning to work with specific color atec morphs, you will constanly be worrying about where to rehome 100s of fish in short order.

Read up on culling as well. However, guppy fry can easily be food from older guppies.

Very early on in keeping fish a had swordtails. I migrated from common swords to Xiphophorus montezumae which have the longest tails you will see. I was still overrun.

Definitely talk with eneraldking before you plunge headlong into this.

If all you want is to see a guppy explosion then put two or three pairs in there , along with some floating plants like Hornwort and Water Sprite , feed like crazy and watch the fun .

So I already breed guppies but I had to stop bc I have other things in life to do anyway I do it as a business but I’m trying to start up again but what to trying to a different set up and if needed I can buy another tank because trust me I have lots of tank but they are not suitable for guppies yikes

* If you don't care about breeding certain traits or strains, you can just put those males and females together.
* If you would like to breed specific strains or select on certain traits, you should have multiple tanks.
* And you should have grow out tanks for those fry. Unless, those tanks are big enough and that you're sure that the adults won't eat those fry, then those fry can left with the adults. There are breeds that will swallow fry without any problems. But there are also breeds that leave their fry completely alone.
* You can also sex those fry at a certain moment so they can grow up with the highest potential if you separate those sexes. For if a young female gets pregnant already, it stagnates the growth. And she'll grow larger when she's not pregnant anymore. So, that may give a delay in letting a female grow up in a better pace to their full potential.
