ok i was going to breed my 2 cardnial red super delta bettas in a week or two. i was wondering that if i bought a grow out tank if i could:

a. how big in the first place

b. could i have a low water level and breed em right in it?

c. thx.

haha, ok thx in advanced.

i dont like the bigger tanks for breeding. i have tried it and the female has too much room to run away. i would stick with a 10 fro breeding. i would go with a 20 for grow out. but it all depends on how many fry you have.

thx for your input. ok im not gonna be able to breed tilljuly 29th or so but im looking forward to it and i want to be ready.

Be sure you do plenty of research before you actually breed them, and be sure you're prepared for the work involved, it's not something you can do and then forget about it, there will be LOTS of fry that will need to be individually jarred, those jars will then need cleaned, fed etc. I would suggest a minimum 40 gallon growout (or a couple of 20's). I have a 45 and 20 and that will probably not be enough eventually (although I have 2 spawn growing out and will be spawning another next week). Although if you only plan on doing the one spawn then I guess you can get by with only a 20 if you cull down to an appropriate amount of fry (if nature doesn't do it for you).

thx linda for the info. i thought i might add that i am very well reasearched and have read everything i could get my hands on about breeding. quiz me haha. i was thinking about a 40 so thanks for confirming. also i would like to know what you like to do with the culls, im not sure what to do with em. thx and any more info would be great.

NP :) Glad to hear you've done your research, so many people just jump in without researching and thinking about it and as I'm sure you know now, there is plenty to learn.

I haven't had to do much culling yet as my first spawn has ended up only having about 30 Juvis, but there were a couple that developed swim bladder disorder (they were about 1/2" at the time) so I fed them to my community tank, I know some don't like to do this but personally I feel it is the natural way of things, so it doesn't bother me. At least my fish that ate them gets something out of it rather than just flushing it or whatever. However when I get to the point where I have perfectly healthy fish that just won't make it as a good breeder or shower (I plan on showing my fish eventually) then I will probably try to find homes for them or send them to the LFS for trade, I don't think I could put a perfectly healthy fish in for my others to eat just because he/she doesn't have the perfect coloing and finnage, hehe. But I may change my mind when I end up with more fish than I know what to do with, haha.

i see what you mean about the sick ones, survival of the weakest right? as for the bad finnage and coloring will the LFS take them? seeing how they are not "pretty" so to speak and will not sell. also as a minor(hard to believe huh haha, j/k) i dont know if they would be in the mood to strike a deal with me, keep me posted.

Well the ones I'd take to the LFS would be poor quality in show terms, but to a regular LFS and people just wanting pets they are perfectly fine and probably nicer looking than most the the "mutts" the LFS get in (not to say they aren't beutiful either, don't get me wrong). I'm working with show quality lines, so the quality is quite higher from the mass produced Bettas you see at LFS or Wally World or PetSMart/PetCo.
