breeding platys/guppies

can anyone tell me how i can my platys or guppies to breed. do i have leave it to chance or is there something i can do to get the process going.

i currently have 7 platys. 6 of them are from one batch that survived but are currently to small to breed as i cant tell yet whether they are male of female. the other platy is a large male.

i also have 3 female and 4 male guppies and they have been together for about 3 months now but i have no babies.

can anyone help please

Try turning the temperature up to 78 or so, and feed them good foods! Also, you may not be seeing any breeding from the Guppies, because since you have more males then females, the females can be very stressed out. It should be 1 male per 2-3 females...so do what you can to get it as close to that as possible.

Also, it may be that all your fry are getting eaten, so you can't tell you've had any babies?

isolation is the key. put 1 male to 2 or 3 females and make sure they are different species. I myself am not up to breeding my mollies and guppies but if it happens, it happens.

Different species..? As in Platies to breed with Swords, and Mollies with Guppies? Or different color variations? Though neither should stop breeding...most Livebearers do not hesitate to breed with any color they can.

Try feeding them good high-protein foods, like Bloodworms, Brine Shrimp, Daphnia...etc. Live, Frozen, Or Freeze-dried. And make sure they don't have any diseases! Good luck.

I'll add something useful though....what size tank is it? Sometimes if Livebearers feel cramped and stressed out, they won't breed.

I completely agree with the advice given. Watch for the later signs of pregnancy in case they are giving birht and the fry are being eaten. When they reach the late stages it might be worth investing in a breeding tank (wither to insert into your current tank or a small seperate one)
