I have never gone in for fish breeding but after years of keeping fish I wonder why I have never had fry in my tanks just because there could be.

I have at present i my six footer, various quantities of:

diamond tetras
black phantom tetras
neon tetras
peppered corys
khuli loaches
BN catfish (only one)
zebra loaches
Siamese Algae Eater (only one)

oh, and Clown Loaches

Could it be the presence of the Clowns that ensures that nothing breeds or is there something I'm missing when it comes to offspring?

Each species would have their own ideal setups and water pH/softness for breeding, and I'd say your bottom dwellers would all eat eggs in nests on glass or in tank decor, with your tetras likely eating any eggs free floating in the water. Most people breed in special breeding tanks for a reason ;) It's unlikely unless you have livebearers that pump out babies all the time you will see successful breeding in a community tank.

As far as I know, Khuli loaches don't breed in captivity, nor clown loaches without very specialised setup. Most of the Tetras require soft acidic water. Neons would require stimulating for spawning in coolerfresh water at sunrise by replacing 25% of the water. I'm not sure if peppered corrys breed as much as Albino Corys, but assuming you have males and females, you should see eggs on the glass, or if the eggs are being eaten, you should a least see the glue where the eggs were.
