Hi
Just wondered if anybody could tell me why my molly is not a successful mum. She became gravid by a dalmation sailfin male, and she is marbled. When she delivers, only one or two are born and the labour seems to last for a long time (days). The last batch she had were virtually all malformed :( . Could this be because they are not of exactly the same breed? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

mayb shes just not cut out 4 being a mum yet. wot else is in the tank that she got pregnant in ? are their ne guppys in there ? it cud be that they were deformed cus it was a male guppy who got her pregnant.

Mollies and guppies are from the same genus Poecillia (I think thats how its spelled). That close relationship enables them to possibly crossbreed but I have never heard of or witnessed it myself. Platies couldn't crossbreed with guppies they aren't related species.

:kana:
Have been doing some research into interbreeding and it seems that guppies can breed with endlers and regular river minnows. Platys and swordtails can interbreed as can platys and mollies but mollies breeding with swordtails is unheard of. Mollies definitely can't breed with guppies.
My marbled molly is pregnant again and I am considering trying a bigger trap this time instead of moving her to another tank (which is what I did before). If that doesn't work then I will have to consider whether she is fit to breed at all.
