Can someone lay out Krib' breeding behaviour etc for me please. I've just been reading some pretty scarey threads on what's going to happen. I got a pair on Friday.

Edit>
I've read on a different website that they like to eat guppies, is this true?

What are breeding tubes? Do I need to be able to see these, so that I'll know that they're ready to mate/

What is this "mating" dance that others speak of, but don't describe?

My ph is 7.5 does that mean I will always get mainly male fry? I'm not about to mess with my ph! I actually want female as the LFS will be able to sell these easier because they are so much more colourful.

What do the eggs look like? I can't find any pictures of them either only fry.

Ohhh and they have 3 caves to choose from and they spend a lot of time swimming between the 3.

I bred them in a 20 long, as long as they have their territory they aren't a problem. I had a small plec & a few corys in with them, the corys would get nipped once in a while, but I provided cover for them at the opposite end of the tank from where the kribs had spawned.

Ok, thanks Tolak.

How will I know if they're going to breed? I read something about breeding tubes, is this accurate?

they will take up residence in a cave, when this happens everything and anything near the cave will generally be attacked, When i kept them i ended up with the Kribs at one end and everything else crammed up the other in fear.

kribs despise fancy-finned fish and will attack them.

you don't need a breeding tube. kribs breed in caves. try using an inverted terra cotta flowerpot with a small hole drilled on the side. you'll know when they breed when you see eggs sticking to the inside surface of the pot.

i've never seen such a mating dance, but the 2 kribs will usually test each other by locking lips.

higher than ph 7 = more male fry than female, but you will still get some females.

eggs look like most other fish eggs i guess. you'll know they're eggs when you see them.

they need a cave where you can't see them. otherwise, they won't breed. that's why i suggested the inverted pot with small hole entrance.

hi there,iv got a great pair of kribs.bloody fry factory they are.they started breeding in a reptile cave i purchased and haven't stopped.the mating "dance" you mention is probably when the female(mainly, but i have seen my male do it a few times) contorts herself into a kind of "s" shape and shakes at her mate.they may faff around like this for ages before finally spawning.my female goes missing for a good week with her mate gaurding her and the eggs/fry until they emerge together ready to ruff up any fish that comes to near.they have since moved on from they cave a supplied them with and now breed under a large piece of mopani wood in the tank.they move loads of sand and make a right mess.
but its real satisfying seeing the fry, good luck :good:
oh and im afraid my young son moved some guppy teenagers into my tank as he was overcrowded, they took a bit of a beeting so be carefull on that score
