;) I just bought a beautiful female guppy and was thinking about breeding her. I had batchs of guppy fry, but the mothers always died after delivering their babies. I'm planning to transport any pregnant fish into a seperate tank so I can save as many fry as possble. . . and becuase my main tank has a couple of drawf african frogs and I'm certain that they'll have the babies as a snack. How can I keep the female guppy alive after she delivers the fry? I don't want to lose her because of too much stress. Any advice?

How big is the other tank you'll move her too? If it's quite large you could put her in there quite early before she starts "showing". Then she could have plenty of time to settle in. Just let her give birth in the tank because nets can stress the fish. Instead use live plants with fine leaves or java fern for the fry to hide in. Don't return her to the main tank straight away, leave her in until she's eating and acting normally again. She might manage to eat some of the fry but at least you'll know the survivers are tough and healthy (the sick & deformed ones get eaten pretty quick). All this should reduce the stress on your girl, I never lost any females this way. :D HTH

I dont understand why they keep dying on you :/ . Maybe they're apart of a weak strain, i dunno. All im saying is i have females that have had 4 batches of fry with over 20 healthy babies each time and the mom is still going strong. Anyways, here's what i do. I make sure my fish get the best quality and variety of foods as possible. My females always love bloodworms, tubifex worms and brine shrimp pellets and i do 2 water changes a week. When it comes to giving birth i turn the temp up a few degrees(around 78-79F) and if my males are very drawn to her at that time, i put her in a breeder trap with a plant to make her feel more secure(i find my females want to hide and be alone when delivering). Also, while she's giving birth i feed the mother bloodworms b/c they always seem more hungry after/during giving birth(im sure you would be too after popping out 30 babies), also to keep her energy levels up and to fill her up so less fry will be eaten by her.
Well thats all i got to offer. I Hope the next female works out for you  :)

;) Thanks for the advice! I have small plastic container that's around one gallon and I use it mainly for a hospital tank. I have an air pumo and heater for it. I also have a breeding net available.

I'm not sure if the female guppy is already pregnant? Near her vent fin, she has a large dark gravid spot and I'm not certain if she's carrying babies! Can anyone describle what a pregnant guppy looks like? :/

About two days ago i posted a pictur eof female guppy who was due that day. Here's the LINK

Basically mine become so pregnant to the point that there belly gets almost squar-ish, the gravid spot is larger and darker, and her "delivery area" gets swollen and sort of pertrudes out. From there, the female becomes not as active and often wants to be alone to have her fry.

Good luck sasha

-_- Um. . . I'm not quite sure. Her gravid spot is a little large and she doesn't appears as active as she was yesterday. I'll post a few pictures of her, but thanks for the pictures of pregnant guppies! ;)

:hyper: Something starnge happened yesterday when I put her into the tank. She joined my group of Pristella Tetars and followed them like she was park of the school. It looked so funny!
