Evening all. Was just wondering if anyone new wether gold barbs scatter fertilised eggs or unfertilised eggs. One of my barbs has gone quite chubby very quickly. It seems healthy and I think as its slightly duller around the side making it a female. I've done some looking on the web but nowere states what stage the eggs are at when scattered. Many thanks

The eggs are unfertilized in the female. When they spawn, the male releases sperm as the female releases eggs. Best way to do it is put the female in a 10 gal with marbles or coarse gravel, pea gravel works. Let the female be in there for a day or two, then add a male in the evening. By morning the female should be slim again, if not leave them for a couple of days, if they don't spawn, swap males. Eventually she should be receptive to one.
After spawning remove the parents to their regular tank. Add a mature sponge filter and in 5-7 days should see little slivers darting about, this is when you went to start feeding. Good first foods are microworms and prepared liquid fry food for egg layers.
