I own a big comm tan and a small shrimp tank ive just bought a 60 litre tank and before i decide whether to use my already existing tank water rather than going for a certain water range im looking to try my hand at breeding. Can anyone suggest some easy to medium difficulty fish to breed. I was thinking angelfish, rams or severums. Any suggestions?

Guppies, Swordtails, any of the livebearer species in fact.

I agree. Livebearers will practically breed themselves! All you need is to put a trio of 1 male to 2 females together and you can be sure of fry in a month! You can go over to that section for more info. :good:

im looking for a bit more of a challenge to be fair and also something i could atleast sell on. If i can breed angels and grow them a few inches i could easily shift them for 2 3 quid each. Guppies ect you have to give away lol

Use your existing tank water for what, exactly?

I must say, breeding Rams would be fantastic, love those fish !

Terry.

are you wanting to use the 60L tank as the breeding tank?

if so angels and severums and most cichlids except maybe dwarfs like apistos etc are a no no. even bolivian rams would need more than that in my opinion.

if your looking at making a few quid then re-think. the costs of running the tank, water, dechlorinater, food etc etc etc isnt cheap and to sell a few fish for a few quid will no way cover the costs of the set up and running it right. the fish will have to be grown to a size thats selable to the shop which again costs you in feeding and running. you will also need more than 1 tank as the fry will need their own tank and then grow out tanks that are big enough to grow out the amount of fish that hatch. then unless guarenteed to sell every fish you will need holding tanks for the bigger fish so they dont harm the fry or smaller fish you have raised. corys have between 50-120 eggs every spawn so potentially thats a lont of fish that need to grow to roughly 1.5 inches before they can be sold on. angels lay 100's of eggs as do most cichlids.

a breeding project is a great idea but dont think you will make much money from it unless you have something that little bit special to breed. even ray breeders hardly make much cash.... it takes up lots of time and effort to breed fish successfully and to produce quality healthy fish.

to kick start the proccess. but my comm tank water bang on my desired ph and has a high kh and and gh so would rather do my research and start again with water from the tap and get the desired water levels i want from scratch. lol

yeah i totally agree. i didnt realise some fish wouldnt breed if the tank was overly small. i think rams might just do it though. also its not about making money for the time being. its an experiment. as i would love to breed high quality discuc in the future, discus i could retail for 50 to 150 quid. so i would like something like angels preferably to gewt used to the way they pair which is similar to discus. overall i think il just give the rams a go first. ya never know could be the start of a future business and if not then atleast i begun to try :)

I have a breeding pair of Jack Dempsey Cichlids. My last spawn was 400 plus. They are in a 75g tank and I think that is too small for breeding cichlids and I am currently trying to get a bigger tank. You best bet will be to breed livebearers unless you can get a bigger tank to cupport the spawn of an egg laying fish

yeah i may have to :) although if i get a good size tank il probz be nieve enough to try discus right away haha :L x

you may want to read devotedtodiscus's breeding log before trying your hand at breeding an expensive fish like that!

while i agree that watching a female livebearer getting fatter and fatter and watching her give birth and successfully raising fry is a very satisfying goal....i would always suggest that that before ( yes ive had them give birth in the bag on the way home too
rolleyes.gif
) you do this you check with LFS or private means to see if these baby fish have homes to go to when they grow enough.... satisfaction starts to take a back seat to panic when your stuck with a 60l tank and over 200 fry

yes i have a good connection with my lfs and they would happily take unwanted fish of me as they have before. i think il just turn my 60l into something else and save up for a good new tank :)
