Good afternoon members my name is Eric and i have been interested it tropical fish for about 12 months, i recently completly emptied my tank to give it a good cleaning out, changed the gravel after giving it a good washing, bought new plants and replaced my fish. Within 3 months i had lost half my fish and couldn't put it down to anything then it suddenly clicked, what an idiot, i had totally forgot to CYCLE my tank prior to replacing my fish, SO LET THIS BE A LESSON TO TOSE WHO ARE THINKING OF DOING THIS AS A HOBBY, YOU MUST CYCLE YOUR TANK FIRST.

Now to my questions, when i bought the new plants i also bought a piece of driftwood and i have got moss growing all arround it but since i put it in i have loads of snails and they are multiplying (dirty buggers) and just wondered will they be ok for my tank, i have taken piccys but can't upload as they are to big a file.

I am also thinking of buying some black mollies to have a go at breeding is my water ok to do this.

PH = 7.5
Amonia = 0
Nitrate = 5
Nitrite = 0
Water temp = 25c

Your advice would be appreciated.

Welcome!

The snail population will diminish with less available food.  I used to just suck up any snails I saw when doing a water change.  The snails are harmless, and in their own way, beneficial.  When I got a bristlenose pleco it outcompeted the snails for algae, and I think it ate the eggs and/or juvenile snails.  No more snail issue, and to be honest, I've not been able to find a snail for about two years (roughly as long as I've had the BN).

How big is your tank?

Hi, :hi: to the forum Eric
If you upload the pics to a site like PhotoBucket then post the link here we will be able to see them.
Can we see some pics of your tank? :snap:

Thanks for your replies, my tank is only a 60ltr but i do like it, only last week one of my danio's was (i thought) about to lay some eggs, i googled to see what one looked like and it did indeed match the photo. Went out and bought cheap plastic 21ltr tank, heater, and filter only for her to die on me, what was going on there i don't know. I did read on another forum that the same thing happened and the owner dicected the fish to get the eggs, it won't surprise you to know that other members on that forum wern't to impressed with her actions as neither was i.

I wil indeedy upload me piccys to photobucket and try to upload for this forum. Again many thanks for your replies and it's nice to know i can come here for any assistance i may need.

Regards.
