I have bred bettas before and that was about two years ago. and all the fry died... i think it was the water. it got really dirty. and now i do not have any bettas anymore and want to get back into it.
I have been researching the past couple weeks b/c i forget most of the stuff from two years ago...
And i have a few ?'s on it.
First i want to know what kind of filter i should get. I know a sponge or a corner filter but can u please be specific??
and i wanted to know where you can get a valve to control the air flow to control the flow of the filter.
And my last. When do you leave the filter off and when do u turn it on? - i think i read to turn it on at a week> is that right?
and i heard of a penn plax corner filter to get that>?

Thanks,
Chris

You can take one of these simple boxfilters, made out of transparent plastic. For the valve: just ask for it in any aquariumshop. Here's a picture. You cut the air tube in 2 (between the filter and the pump) and you put it in between. Then you open or close it until you get the flow you desire.

Ok thanks. ill probably use a sponge or corner filter... i used a sponge last time i had them... and it worked perty good.
So i still need to know when to turn the filter on. which i have heard at one week.
Right now i dont have any bettas but im gonna get some and so im getting all this research done before i get them, and i would take care of them for a while before i bred them... i think i would be oka to breed if i had everything b/c i have researched a ton.
and i have read a lot of stuff from bettatalk.com and other things....

Thanks.

On my last spawn I had the filter on from the very beginning. This latest time (which failed, though it wasn't because of filter) I tried to do filterless. Some people wait until the fry are free swimming to turn it on. I really think it's a matter of opinion on when to actually start the filter. Some do filterless the whole time. Some filter from the start. Some wait until the fry are free swimming. Some wait until the fry are a week or so old. There are a bunch of different opinions on that one.

This is probably the best thing for the first few weeks, though personally I wouldn't start filtering too soon.

i think i had a filter the whole time with my fry. i had a sponge filter and it looked very different. it had like these big sponge things on the out side and the dirty stuff would be on the sponges and i would pull it out and wash the sponges off...
so if i get the same kind of filter i would use it b/c it doesnt catch the fry.
What part of the filter is for the valve. what i mean is -is the valve to control the suction of the filter... or to control the flow of the clean water it takes out. b/c the suction of the filter i had wasnt that strong and the water flow wasnt that bad either, it came out like a tube...
i hope you understand that.
And i forgot to add. Do you need a bubbler for the fry when they are born. i have read and i didnt see anywhere that you need it. i know that not all of their organs are developed all the way on the first few days, so would i need a bubbler in the tank for them to breathe?
i kno... i have a lot of questions...lol

Thanks a lot!
Chris

The spondge filter will airate the water as long as the water level is above the outlet of water. what would you feed you fry?

So do you mean that as long as the filtered water is flowing out above the tank water it will airate the water?
- i know that if you have it like that it will pull air into the water beacause it will have bubbles in the water.....

I have a boxfilter which has a small white airstone (they call them here: chalk airstones; sorry, translation from Spanish) integrated. These airstones produce very fine bubbles, and are excellent for not disturbing the watersurface (doesn't mess up the bubblenest). If your's doesn't have an airstone, it is very easy to buy one separately, and install it in the hard plastic round tube that you find in the middle of the filterbox (the outlet). Ask your store to do it for you, if you are not sure.

i dont know what kind of filter i am going to get. probably a sponge. i dont even have a betta yet but im going to get my stuff to get one... then later go into breeding. but i want to read up on everything i can...
here is the filter i had.. this one says 55 gallon and up but mine was for small ones... http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Aquarium-Sponge-Bi...bayphotohosting

Copy and paste it... i hope it takes you there, and this is the same kind i had. there is a big tube that the water flows out of... and that causes bubbles when it goes into the water.. so would i need a bubbler?
and i dont think i would need a valve because then the suction wouldnt be to strong, and its not that strong anyway... ?

You do not need a bubbler necessary; just look how big the bubbles get. I found that sometimes they are so big, that they really splash the surface if you see what I mean. For that reason I now have them with the airstones. Whether you need a valve or not, basically depends on your motor (pump). I am using a valve as the air generated by my pump is pretty high.

I would say: just try it out, and make any adjustments if necessary.

k thanks. i think i got the filter down now...
so i think that is all my questions...
lol... we'll see ..
Thanks,
Chris
