Ok...so this might be a stupid question, but how do you break DOWN a hospital tank?  The fish I had in there died (not surprised).  I was thinking of using a 10% bleach solution to disinfect the tank & media ( a single plastic plant, a rock, and a thin layer of gravel to provide a bottom)?  What about the sponge filter?  It was the secondary on my main tank that I have going in order to be able to transfer it to the hospital tank...but now I'd like to transfer it back without contaminating my main tank.  It's just a sponge-filter.  Do I soak it in 10% bleach too (then dechlorinate).  Or will this ruin it?  Or boil it?  I know it won't transfer back any good bacteria...I just don't want it to transfer back bad bacteria either.  Do I need to just get a new sponge?  I'd like to get it back onto the main tank so that I can get it ready for the next time I'll need it.  Thanks in advance.

Scrub everything in a very hot strong salt solution and then let it dry completely.

Does it need to soak in the solution at all, or just thoroughly scrubbed?

A quick five minute soak is always a good idea; thanks for asking, I'd forgotten that bit

I'm curious:  Does the drying out also help?  I'm assuming that most of the illnesses would die off without water?  I'm mostly asking because of a different tank I have that I was considering re-setting up that has been empty for a little over a month.  Was thinking I might just scrub it down with salt water too while I was at it.  But, wondering if any problems it might have (none confirmed) had before drying out would likely have been gone anyway.

Yes; the drying out does help.

Most freshwater parasites or diseases cannot survive both the salt water (in marine set ups, you'd freshwater for the same purpose) and the drying out; some might be able to survive one or the other, but doing both should cover you.

Thank you so much!  I really appreciate it!

You're very welcome :)
