Just got this tank for £12.50 from eBay :D

(but silver)
I haven't seen a filter like it before though and not sure if it's working properly.
Water is drawn up and trickles onto the sponge which is in a plastic sort of cage in a tray. Beyond this in the tray are 4 plastic balls. The sponge is barely submerged and the balls aren't really at all. Is this right?

It has no heater, just pump and light which work from the same adaptor (so can't have a timer for light :() Next to where the pump plugs in is another hole, so I wonder if a heater could be run from the same adaptor?
Otherwise, it will have to be a standard heater, but not sure how it would fit?

The lid lifts off, so it wouldn't have to thread through the gap. Quite a bit of the wire would have to be submerged though for it to reach the back wall. Is this OK?
Thanks for any help with this :)

Yep. Tanks with built in filtration systems arent known for having good filters, besides, the tank isnt really big enough to filter much.

yep thats all ok, i had this tank, had a betta in it, was actually impressed with the filter ( tho it was a single fish)
there is a light switch at the back of the hood, so i guess youll have to remember to use it lol- good find for that price as they sell new for nearly 45

Thanks guys-yes I was really impressed with it for the price-I wasn't expecting it to be so substantial. It's slightly smaller than my aquael bowl, but looks much bigger. I wanted it for a betta too, but I think at least some snails/shrimps/frogs might fit too.
Bizarre filter though-surely half of it can't colonise bacteria as it's dry?!
I'll give it a go. H is quite keen to get it set up which is a change in attitude for him!
