My Cories do well, you should really have more than 2. I also have a bristle nose that when not munching algae likes to have a dig in the substrate. You could always rein in the feeding a bit too.

how many cories do you think i could fit in a 20 gallon tank comfortably with quite a few other small fish?

Without specifics I couldn't guess. Some people go in the inch per gallon rule. I wouldn't have less than 6 in mine, I currently have about 12 but I have about 77 UK gallons to play with.

I'd reccomend a small group of pitbull plecos (parotocinclus jumbo) but like crux mentions, without knowing how good your filtration level is, exactly what other fish are in the tank, the quality (how snobbish) of your maintenance regime and in my case being sober; it'll probably be dfficult to work out the correct stocking level.
As a hint Pitbulls only get to 2inches, but do also produce a fair amount of waste for their size.

haha well, if your curious, my water is checked regularily, i have 3 air stones running, and one bubble wall, i have a decent sized filter running 24/7 and i vaccum the gravel and clean the plants every weekend or so, and i use ph balancers, salt balancers(no its not a saltwater tank, just need the salt to regulate everything lol) and water purifier stuff, so yah, pretty well maintained lol. all this and im only 15! :D
