So i should finally be getting my new tank next weekend(yay!!) and i will be doing a fishless cycle using mature media. I have been looking through the forum to find where to get a bottle of ammonia from and noticed that recently people have mentioned getting it from both boots and homebase(im in the uk). I did a quick search on boots website and found this:

http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Household-ammonia-500ml_923908/

Just wanted to check if this is the same one others have purchased from boots? I will be asking instore for it but atleast if they dont have it in our local one i could order this one to collect in store if its the right thing. If not is there anyway people could post photos of the bottles they have gotten from Boots/Homebase so i know im definately picking up the right thing? dont want anything delaying my cycling ;)

Hey, not 100% about the brands of ammonia but if you are indeed using mature filter media then it is already "cycled".

You can start adding fish but just do it slowly (over a few weeks or so) and monitor the water stats frequently to make sure your tank is stable.

It's not the tank itself that needs to cycle but the filter media as that is where the bacteria gathers.

I know I didn't directly answer but I hope this helps

Thankyou for the reply. I was under the impression that i would still need to add the ammonia/fishless cycle but that it would just be cycled in a much shorter time? I did post another thread last week asking about this and that is what i was told by other users so now im a little confused

I've always just taken a piece of mature media over to one of my new tanks and then added a fish or 2.

I guess this could still be considered a fish-in cycle because your media is not 100% cycled but everything should be fine and if your water stats do go a little bit off just do a water change and test again later. That should correct any problems.

Thanks again for the reply. At the moment i only have 2 african dwarf frogs that will be going in the tank-i plan to get more frogs and a Betta and i was considering putting the newbies in the new tank first for the quarantine period and then adding my guys after so im not sure about just adding the new fish to a tank that isnt completely cycled, dont want it to cause problems or stress for them, but once i have the tank set up i shall make a decision about how to cycle it so thanks for the input!

Just to bump this again so that if i do decide to get the ammonia i can be sure im getting the right one. I did ask in my local boots for it yesterday but they didnt have any so couldnt even check out the ingredients etc for myself!

That should be fine. The ammonia you linked to didn't have any additives to it except "ammonia". :)

That also could mean that they are too lazy to list all of them. ;)

Thankyou both for the replies! Glad i was on the right track, good to know i wont be getting the wrong stuff now :good: Will see if i can get some ordered in to my local store then!

No problem. I'm glad we could help! :)
